Wow, how big can this mod get?

Jesus christ this mod is going to be huge, its already has a file size bigger than most commercial games, yet its going to get even bigger come the next release, this is seriously insane. At first I thought ok, Ill just download it right, no biggie, but then I saw that the not only did I have to download a 698mb file, but then I had to download a 499mb file, and if that wasnt enought lets tack on another 40mb! that comes out to 1237mb! Holy sh*t! I think that the mod should be toned town alot, I mean have a poll to see what maps the community wants to keep and then take the unpopular ones and make them seperate, or take the vehicles the community has no use for, and make them optional. For christ sake, the combined size of this mod is bigger than BF 1942 itself!

If anything, split the big files into even smaller files of 100 to 200mb so that people can download them with relative ease, even on my DSL connection this mod will take possible a complete day to download.

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

the bigger the better - should be no prob to dl with broadband. Just start the dl and spend the day doin something else. Shouldn't be that hard..
And if your using dial-up ask a friend of yours to dl it for you.

There is really no rational reason to reduce the size of the mod

King_Jerad September 4th, 2004 02:54 PM

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

I have broadband, but as of right now its not up to speed (87kbps) so I only get about 19kbps downloads, now with that speed a 300mb file takes like 6 hours, so a 600mb file would probably take like 12 hours if 100mb= 2 hours which is what Im guessing, 10 hours is still a long time, and after that I will still have to download a 499mb map pack which will take about 10 hours, and thats the current version, Im guessing the new version will probably be somwhere around 800mb for the main file, and around 600mb for the map pack file, thats getting a little insane dont you think.

Oompa September 4th, 2004 02:59 PM

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

Well the team has considered makeing the file smaller by upgradeing to a differnt engine that has features that the team programed in to the mod. Making the file smaller.

Mp5-Killa September 4th, 2004 03:06 PM

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

You could buy the DVD? You could set it downloading over night? (like i did) The more maps the better, the more vehicles the better, the more weapons the better (ok ok you get the drift :P).

But seriously, the DICE maps take up a few KB so there's no point in removing them and 90 percent of the current FH maps are excellent, the other 10 percent just need a little tweaking imo. I want it bigger, i want it bigger! :P

RottingChrist September 4th, 2004 03:15 PM

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

Tone the mod down? That's pretty retarded. Would you rather have a bland mod at 500MB or a badass mod (which is worth more than alot of games) at over a gig.

Nevermind. Lets vote to remove most weapons, vehicles, maps and textures. It's much too big to leave them in.

We're not about to tone down anything just because it bothers you.

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

That was hardly a valid argument, Jerad. You are the first person I've seen that has ever complained there is too much in a mod. A mod that is free for you, by the way. Get over it. :smack:

King_Jerad September 4th, 2004 04:25 PM

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

Jeez you didnt have to flame me for my opinion did you? I dont want them to strip down the mod, I just want the file size to be smaller.

By the way, SBC says that for the first 10 days they are optimizing the line, so my crappy 19k could go way up, only time will tell.

Kakoru September 4th, 2004 04:50 PM

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

Uhhh.. I think Jerad has point though. The size of FH will discourage the average BFers and they will probably end up not downloading the mod.. I believe there's a reason why there's not many people playing the mod.
...but yeah, not sure how they can make the file size smaller.

(btw, I keep wondering why people always flame people and other mods)

ppl are downloading hundreds of gb's of movies, mp3s and porn but suddenly start to cry because of 1.x gb!!!

Thats exactly what I meant! I am an average BFer, and I am discouraged from downloading FH becuase of its file size, I will still probably download it, but the point remains that others might think its to big, most mods are from 100-500mb, this is double that.

By the way, how many combined maps are enculded with FH?

I wouldn't care if .65 was over 2 gigs, heck i run at 340-360 kbs transfer speed. Bring on the gigs!!!

oh no its the same argument brought up every single fh version!

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

Making FH smaller with less content is not a valid option. I would be a step backwards instead of forwards and nobody want that.

But maybe the FH-Devs could design a demo for FH, consistig of a map or two and all the required files. That could show people what this Mod is all about and wouldn“t force them to download 1.7 GB just to find out they dont like it...

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

I love the "it will discourage people" argument. It's like a classic song played every once in a while that everyone loves to listen to but the band is dead. This point has been proven wrong time and time again by the growing number of FH fans.

-|DKS|- deathBOB September 4th, 2004 07:13 PM

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

ya, but yalls viewpoint doesnt matter, your hardcore FH players... if the team released a 60gb mod, you would still download it!

but what about the weekend player who wants to try something new? A multi-gig download just to "try it out" ? Thats dumb... So what do you do? Split into smaller files! ~400 megs each would be pretty nice...

Maybe instead of releasing a new version they could try a little something called a patch!

As far as I've heard they are going to start doing that after .65. Although that's what they said after .6 as well. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

And this is a bad thing? Im perfectly happy with the ammount of fh players, and for the most part they are good for teamwork etc. There are plenty of servers, at least a few full all the time. The last thing this mod needs are a bunch of kids running around like you have in bf1942/dc (not saying there all that way, but lots are).

How is that argument wrong? Despite the quality of the mod, it's nowhere near the number of ppl compared to DC.
I honestly wouldn't have downloaded Pirates if the size was 1.5 gb. Would you?

and again, im not saying to tone down the quality stuff but it DOES discourage people

....AND I know there's a positive side that there's less smacktards in FH compared to DC but...still.. It would be nice if FH got much more attention.

More attention? Why? And what more do you want? All around the Battlefield communtiy all I hear about it how awesome FH is. There is no need to lessen the amount of stuff, but they did say they are optimizing it by removing useless files.

Fer September 5th, 2004 01:47 AM

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

I think that making a demo would be a GREAT IDEA. There are many ppl that wont try this mod only because of that. For example, in Spain having a 256 dsl is the maximum u can afford (if u dont want to pay an excessive amount of money), thus downloading more than 1 gig is a nightmare (fortunately they r going to double every dsl connection, starting in October).
I think that the FH team should consider building a demo after 0.65 release (i dont think it would be too much work, d it?)

D_Day_Dawson September 5th, 2004 04:31 AM

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

Demo - more workdevs busy/lives, free mod, .. let's think about .... errr.. no, I would guess ;)

btw, use getright or whatever even if you're on cable/dsl and download in chunks if you want.

Getright is not a good idea, since 90 percent of download sites cannot be resumed.
I ll try bittorrent this time.

Yeah but.. Im not just talking about the BF community. Im talking about something more wider than that.
For example, DC won "mod of the year" for 2002 and 2003.. I would one day love to see that happen for FH too..
Don't you think so too?

D_Day_Dawson September 6th, 2004 12:46 AM

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

I don't think FH will win mod of the year for 2002 and 2003 :( (Okay, I'm being pedantic :)).
So it does sound like more people will be using bittorrent this time...
wtr Getright I usually find a server that'll allow resuming if you look hard enough - I must have used it to get the last FH release as my PC is never on for that long.

Ohioan September 6th, 2004 12:54 AM

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

Use FlashGet. Its a much better download manager. Cheap as free, also.

If you want to go Bittorrent but need to resume easily, use Azureus. It has fast file resuming (dosent need to re-verify the whole file every time you shut the prog off) and is very simple and easy to use, with a lot of good information returned to you.

D_Day_Dawson September 7th, 2004 05:51 AM

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

Yeah, I've downloaded Azureus, but yet to install it...
As for FlashGet - I'm unsure whether it has spyware - maybe it just installs the HBO/IE Toolbar though - will investigate further.. hehe - I'm very suspicious of anything free nowadays :)

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

dont worry, its worth the long wait.

what i suggest doing is starting the download in the morning, the going to work and it should be done by the time you get home. or, start it before you go to bed, then i will be ready in the morning. personally, i got it off of filefront.com in about 4 hours after a 5 minute wait. use them, free and fast.

That is a 'big' problem, but if the devs decide to split the download files into 8 packs of 200Mb each it would be better for 56k guys but more complicated to install, use, etc, so there' s no solution, I think, for that.

Seriously people with 56k shouldnt have bought bf1942 unless they are planning to get faster connection.

Thank God BF2 will no longer support 56k.

I just think in mondern times you cant expect people to take you lacking Hardware into account. Or do you expect DOOM III to run on your 486 DX2 66 Mhz...

A download manager is the best option for people with low bandwidth. If you download stuff bit by bit, then you should have it by the end of the week...

I would think some people in some countries can't get broadband in any shape or form - You can't blame them for that... Ah, I know, they can move to a different country :D
People with 56k I'm sure will want to download FH0.65/6, if not for online play then for the SP-additions I would guess. I just hope for their sakes it's hosted on a 'resuming' server.
Personally I dunno how well BT will work for me (300k cable) as I'm sure my upload speed is dire.. (NTLWorld).

Hey, another NTL customer :D

Did you find when you speed went from 150 k to 300 k that ur DL speeds hardly changed? I went from 600 k to 750 k and they hardly changed  Anyway back to the size the bigger the better.

Er, I was already on 300k (paying for 150k) - an undocumented benefit of using the STB (it allocated 150k for the PC and 150k for STB-browsing; which I never used, so you get the full 'width' :) )
Pity then that it didn't inrease to 450k - it just stuck to 300k
Found it's well fast enough for game-playing anyway.

Re: Wow, how big can this mod get?

 I don't understand all you guys who want the mod broken up into smaller files instead of a couple of bigger ones..... That won't help you. You STILL have to download the full size, no matter if you broke it down into 15 100Mb files...it is STILL 1.5 gig or whatever.

please explain why 4 downloads of 400Mb is "better" than 2 downloads of 800Mb or 1 download of 1.6Gig.
