Port Problems

Ugh ok...I've just installed Azureus hoping that it would DL 0.6 faster than Emule (wich was "humanely" put down) and it asks me for my bittorrent port, and it's not the default 6881, how can I find out?

FactionRecon March 5th, 2004 05:22 PM

Re: Port Problems

Re: Port Problems

FactionRecon March 5th, 2004 05:31 PM

Re: Port Problems

thats nice but it still doesnt awnser my question, how do I find what port is my BT port?

FactionRecon March 5th, 2004 05:50 PM

Re: Port Problems

when that screen comes up, just click "OK" and proceed to the next screen, where as far as I remember is the last screen. So just ignore that part of the setup

Re: Port Problems

yes but if I ignore that my download is going to take a longer time than if i can find out what it is

BitTorrent, by default, uses tcp ports 6881-6889. If you open up tcp/6881 on your firewall and have NAT turned on, you will have no problems.

Do you have a standalone router, or are you running the built-in winbloze firewall, or both? If you're running a router, just go to the configuration and open up the ports in the filter. If you're running the M$ firewall, then you'll have to change the settings most likely in Control Panel.

Re: Port Problems

where would the router settings and window$ firewall settings be in control panel, Admin tools, accesibility options, network connections...

To be honest I've never used the standard Windows firewall -- I don't trust MS products so I wouldn't put security in their hands. If you're running XP, you should have configured it the first time you logged in. I would Google "Windows XP Firewall" and I'm sure you could find some information about that. As for your router, most common routers have a web interface that you can use to change settings. I would consult your specific router's manual, and if you don't have it, do a search for it and I'm sure you'll find it.

EDIT: I would stick with the default port of 6881 -- no one port is going to be faster than the others.

Bittorent uses ports 6881 to 6999 hope that helps.

You know the little smiley face under the "Health" column? What color is it? If it's green, then you're fine. If it's yellow, you still have the NAT problem but as long as you're getting good speeds, don't worry about it.

@Jakester

The most common port is 6881 since it's default.

Re: Port Problems

heath column? where's that

woah, speed just shot up to 250kbps (knockwood)

Re: Port Problems

Azureus managed to crash my router every time I start it. I had to reconfigure that thing 3 times before I decided I'd stick with Emule's 30kbps. I think Azureus is screwing on ports that it should be.

What kind of router do you have? How did you have it configured that Azureus crashed it? I just Nmaped this machine (on which Azureus is currently running) from my linux box (bounced off an outside relay) and there were no other ports opened.
