I reckon it would need AI fired arty in order for it to work. I like how its used on EoD.
That's actually a very good idea. It's used well in EoD and in XWW2 in some of the D-Day maps. Automated arty strikes every 20-30 seconds would be cool if they looked good and didn't cause much lag. This would reduce the hassle of making new artillery and could be implemented in other maps.
make it so that every 45 sec some random bombs spawn in air and fall down.. and both teams should have artilery
cool cant wait to take the guns on the destroyer and shoot on the city and those Marines looks kinda cool

Perhaps its bordering on the realms of SDK land, but i was thinking along the lines of having yer uber heavy german arty in game and visible but *not* sitable.
Instead tie each arty piece or sets of arty to specific commander kits, and these kits with their binoculars would 'request artillery' and the AI would fire @ the specified point with a spread over a wide area, based upon a delay of some sort.
I'm not sure what the firing rate of artillery was really like back in then i.e could they have prolonged saturated bombing with a lengthy break, or was it sporadic or could they go on indefinately? It would need something in place to prevent it becoming too spammy. You could have the sounds of the shells whistling over head as it happens.
It would rock if the devs made this possible!

I like it. It breaks up the monotony of normal Russian maps (which all seem to be so damn similar). Itd be nice to see the Black Sea Naval infantry skins would be great. I like going from map to map and seeing skins differ on both sides. It gets boring when every map has the same, or close to the same skin. As it stands right now all the Russians have is the quilted looking jackets in a green color and a winter counterpart. Gets a bit boring. Variety is the spice of life as they say, and I think this is a good idea.

I see what you're saying, but the problem with having infantry kits for calling artillery is that it would take a long time to get the infantry past the Soviet defenses and into the city. I'd like the German artillery to come out blazing early in the round, so I think using a small recon plane to spot the AI arty strike would be your best bet since it would get to the destination much more quickly. EoD did something similar with the American Blackbird (is that the right plane?) and it works great!
These arty strikes coupled with Stukas, heavy bombers, and Nebelwerfers would give the map a great atmosphere.
