It was called Dora and Gustav which led some confusion that there were two built.

Re: New Map Idea: Battle of Sevastopol

I already made a Seige of Sebastopol map (You will find more information on it under this name, because translating Russian to most languages translates to 'Sebastopol' not 'Sevastopol', but both names are correct, it just depends on translation. Unfortunately, looking up Sebastopol also gives you a lot of crap about in 1855 when the English had a go at the city as well... seems its a popular port during war...) but I haven't released it yet. I am not happy with it at all. Its a city map surrounded but fields and hills, and the Topography is largely accurate. But like I said, I am not happy with it yet. :)

I was given a series of paperback chronicles of every battle in WW2, there is about 200 of them, and I haven't read even one quarter of them, but I found one called "Blueprint for Disaster: What went wrong for the Russians at Sebastopol?" which is what gave me the idea for it. :)

I already made a thread about the Gustav/Dora here: http://www.gamingforums.com/showthread.php?t=112180And there's a link to an older thread about it in the second post.

Btw, I think this map could be really good, and a nice change from the usual stuff, even if we didn't had the Russian marines skin, nor the 800mm gun.

I see you're a moderator, but are you a FH dev? If so, that's sweet. I hope you can use some of our suggestions for the map.

By the way, Sevastopol is spelled with a "V" in Russian. :)

This is great news Augustus, but I pray you will make connections with FH. It would be great if you gave your map to them, or even worked for them(you can go at your own pace; get support with statics, coding, etc).

Yeah augustus join the fh team the more maps of quality the better, I know your probably pretty busy with point of existence in the next few months but it would still be great if you could make a (fan) map.

I'd hope it would not be a fan but an official map. Fan maps are not distributed as well and if it is the same quality as his other maps, it deserves more. ;)

heh, Thanks guys, I am not on the FH team, I am a moderator because I used to have a hosted site, but I don't anymore, they must have not taken away my moderator status yet.

The map was just for my own entertainment, I was gonna release it as a fan map, I think FH have enough really talented mappers anyway ;) . Now I have gone back to University after summer holidays I am too busy even for the mods I am on currently anyway (Lost battalion and Point of Existence) and will probably have to withdraw from one of them or go idle or something. :(

Photo of a sunken Soviet destroyer in Sevastopol harbor. It was brought down by Stuka bombers.

A wrecked destroyer in the map like the one in Wake Island would make a cool static object/spawnpoint.

Wait for Augustus to release his map perhaps... then think about what to add......

Gorki defensive bunkers positioned north of the city. :smokin:

http://alainlecomte.free.fr/2603.jpg

These would be the first obstacle in the way of the German advance into the city's interior. Also, prime targets for bombers and artillery strikes. Scout planes would provide spots for the artillery.

I think I saw an American scout plane in the works for FH, but I'm not sure if a German one has been made yet.

I'm sure the Fiesler "Storch" would be their scout aircraft of choice, after the Arado Ar 196 (I think that's the number) used on ships.

Re: New Map Idea: Battle of Sevastopol

I think it would be a good idea. Would give us a reason to model the 600mm SP heavy mortar Karl (or Thor). This mortar was used on both the western front and eastern front and took part in many battles.

Modelling the Dora (Gustav in America) would be cool, but a waste. It is WAAAAY too large and has no reusability afterwards since it only saw combat in Sevastopol.

I would like to see a Battle of Norway situation where the objective is to destroy the Tirpitz (its already modelled). Put tons of AA all over the place for the germans and give the brits the lancs with the huge blockbusters. It would be like the battle of britain map only the other way around.

Plus I would like to see one of those desperate 1945 battles on the Northern Eastern front, where the Prinz Eugen (or was it the Lutzow) gave direct artillery support offshore for the surrounded german troops.

It is kind of a waste to have modelled both the Tirpitz and the Prinz Eugen only for one map. It would be nice to see them in other maps.
