This is legit, right? The first thing my mom said when I told her that I'm letting Stanford University use our computer to run calculations and models of proteins to help cure Cancer, Alzheimer's and other diseases was "Where did you find out about this? You're giving them access to our computer? Whatever, if you screw it up it's on you." I thought she'd be happy that I'm using the computer for something like this, especially considering both my great grandmother and my grandmother are beginning to forget things...

So this is legit, right? I'm not giving my computer over to people who can do malicious things with it, right? Please tell me this is okay.

Well first, you are not handing your computer over to them. You download a work unit from them, your computer works on it, then sends back the results. Total time connected to Stanford is maybe 30 seconds. Everything is encrypted, yada yada... it can all be found here: Folding@home - Main . They can explain it a heck of alot better than I can.

As far as this being legitimate???... I'm sure it is. Stanford University Medical Center is one of the most acclaimed medical universities in the world. Sony must trust them because they ship every PS3 with Folding@Home installed in the operating system. They have been doing the project for 8 years now and almost 900,000 people are folding. They have already published papers on results and have big backing from companies like Apple, Intel, ATi, Dell, Google, Sony plus accredited by The National Science Foundation, and National Institute of Health. It can all be found on their site listed above.

I'm sure browsing this forum poses much more of a risk than running F@H

btw, imlittlev... You have a Work Unit that is bombing out quite badly. check out your stats...

Kakao Stats - Production History - imlittlev

Click on Update History WUs. You have almost 1400 Work units submitted in the last 12 hours, yet only 395 points. Your internet is probably lagging with all the failed work units it's returning. Are you maybe overclocked a bit too much? Something is wrong with your rig to make the work units fail like that.

Ah OK... yeah my x1950pro doesn't like to be overclocked one bit while folding. That must be it. 7.11 is tested, works, and compatible. It's what I'm running also.

Maybe something on the F@H suport forums. Here's the GPU forum:

by the way, running at 3d speeds isnt overclocking.. 2d speeds are just underclocked, from my understanding. my card is rated to run at 625 core/900 memory

also: i can play crysis with demanding settings without crashes/lockup/etc... i get low frames so i know im pushin it..
and it auto switches to 3d clocks.. but if manually switch.. i get many graphical glitches on desktop. if i try to scan for artifacts on ATI tool... locksup..freezes, reboots.

What is the error code you are getting on your Early termination? Those will be in your FAHlog.txt file in the directory you have fah6-win-gpu-console.exe located.

Thanks Rad, I knew this and tried to explain it, but well... She just didn't get it.

Anyways, I'm about 1/10 of the way done on my first WU (I can't have it running at night because my mom can hear the computer in the other room and can't sleep :-/. But I have it running all day (except when I or someone starts gaming, but that's normal, right?). Here's hoping we get to the top!
