On the ATI card.. In that case, I will stay with Nvidia then. I like those better than ATI, for some weird reason .A quad core!! Hmmm.... ??

| If any of you needs help with Linux, you can ask and I, and maybe others, will try to help you. I use Linux for coding and compiling, not that much setting it up. But I should still be able to provide some help. Icelandik, do you still want to fold in Linux? Was it bothering you that you had to type sudo (and the password) to execute many commands, or something else? You can make the root account such that you can login into it and setup everything you need without typing the password every time. But for everyday use is better to use a regular account because you could delete or modify system files that are needed, and Linux is a bit less forgiving than Windows. |

| Nah, I just said that because I'm bitter. I'm perfectly happy installing as root just as long as it works. I couldn't get the install files from Stanford's site to work. I was getting stonewalled with 'access denied' or 'can't execute binary'. Their "simple" instructions of chmod and then run obviously weren't complete. So I tried adapting instructions from other sites and got nowhere. Trying installs from other sites failed, too. I'd get partway through and then the prompts (or lack thereof) would differ from the instructions. It especially pissed me off because getting it going in WinXP took all of 30 secs.

| Ok, I had to try it at home myself. Luckily I had installed Ubuntu 64 a few weeks ago as a dual boot with WinXP. I see what you mean. The thing is that the fah6 client that they provide is a 32bit application, not 64 bit. Other Linux distributions install both 32-bit and 64-bit libraries when you install the 64-bit version of the OS. Ubuntu does not. You need to explicitly install the 32-bit libraries. For this you need to execute in a terminal: sudo apt-get install ia32-libs Once that is done, you can execute the 32-bit client in Ubuntu 64-bit. Let me know if you have any other issues with it. Note that the mpiexec binary included in the archive is a 64-bit application. However, that is needed only to run the client in SMP mode (when you specify -smp on command line). However, one can run the FAH6.0 beta on a 32-bit machine as well, but not in SMP mode. I actually tried it on a P4 machine and it worked. If one has a 32-bit linux install, I would recommend for them to use the FAH6.0 beta instead of the old 5.04 version which is compiled without SSE support. |

| Well, i changed to the SMP client 2 days ago. And i have a xeon quad in my file / VMware server at home Also running SMP on my machine at work, witch is a 6600. runnig 24/7.And yesterday i finished setting up the new backup server at work. And before its going into production, it must be tested. And the best way to test a new server is with the SMP client Hopefully i can test 2 other brand new servers in in a couple of weeks too.

| Wow, you are going to be top producer by far (for awhile :P). So you are running just 1 SMP client on your quads? from what I have been reading on the overclockers forum, the best way to get most ppd (Point per day) is to set up 2 SMP clients. For some reason, the quad when running 1 SMP client only uses the equivalent of 3 cores. Running 2 clients get the most use of all 4 cores. For example, running 1 SMP client could produce 3000 PPD total, but running 2 (1 on each "set" of Cores) could produce 4000 PPD. Each client would be producing 2000 PPD for a total of 4000 PPD. I just rounded up the numbers to make the math examples easier. Also the affinity changer if running under XP or vista is a must. I saw one example of a Q6600 OC'ed to 3.2ghz user increasing his PPD from 3700 to 4400 just by installing the infinity program. Still even your quads at 75% capacity are mind blowing ... it's currently taking me over 3 days to produce a single 1760 WU on my old 3.2 Presler dual xeon. That works out to about 650 PPD. sigh |
