Could such streaks as exist behind BF2 planes in flight (The translucent thin whitish ones) be used in conjunction with the glowing tips for the representation of tracers from aircrafts? I think that would be closest to reality than the long dashes…

not a bad idea, though it might have an effect on FPS. I know that some of my experiments in bf1942 lead to some serious lag issues when I was adding the "smoke" that followed the tracers... but it looked so damn cool.
