I remember when I had to catch up on the rest of my platoon during the movie. We were having a haircut when we were called out to the beach for filming. The guys that were done with the haircut headed for the beach, but I was stuck in the chair, until the hairdresser stopped and told me to run after them. Throwing my gear on, Garand in one hand (fake :\) and my helmet in the other, I started running after my platoon.. And Boy, that was anything but easy.

When you thrust your foot down and backwards, 50% of the power and speed went into the sand. I ran for 200 meters (amazing achivement at the time.. :p ) but felt like 500 meters (or in my perspective at the time 52 miles :p ).. Running in that thing is a bitch. Maybe one could disable sprinting in the wet/soft sand, or slow infantry down somehow?

Otherwise, a cool idea.. nice :)

No seriously...you were an extra in that movie? Amazing. It was actually on the real Iwo? That's some heavy duty history right there

I think a good amount of trick mapping could help this, very rough and bumpy terrain everywhere with a nice thin layer of soft sand on top of it all...So that although you can run and all, you would by moving around a whole bunch of stuff....Come to think of it, no need for the softsand everywhere....Some places, definitely, but otherwise, just a nasty ground with many tiny roughs would make everyone comfortable...Issue is, this would be murder with the grenades...I think tha fact already spoils things for all round soft soil

I completely believe fatjoe, they shot the movie in iceland as well as on the real Iwo Jima, and since there are meant people in iceland, I bet he was in the movie.

And Johnwalker :), Porn is reserved for those special threads.

yes, I was in the movie in the invasion scene, shot in Iceland. You do what ever you can to get involved if they are shooting a major WWII movie near your home, and in search of extras. :)

There were about 14 platoons of people, each platoon consisiting of around 40 people, and in total about 500 Icelandic extras plus, ofcourse, the main cast. Impressive sight to see +300 soldiers run from the boats, up the beach. Even more impressive to be one of them :D

Anyway.. yeah.. I like the idea, would be interesting to see how/if it works..

In retrospect, I should have called this thread 'Sands of Iwo Jima' :)

If I recall, the Japanese government didn't allow battle scenes to be filmed on Iwo. I'm not sure what counts as battle or not though.

And Moose, there is a very special thread sitting at home in Off Topic feeling really rejected and confused right now. Do what's right.

Thanks, Mac.... I slapped my head when I realised where I'd accidentally placed this thread...
