That is the maximum distance you see the ship, or thats when they appear out of the fog.....even then though, dont even try to shoot as your not going to hit anything....Its impossible to even the target untill you get much closer, even then you will find hitting the other ship to be quite difficult

As for file size, there are MANY MANY things that you can delete out of a maps folder to reduce file size, most mods come jampacked with everything under the sun in there, but if you delete the unnecessary stuff even a map that big will unnoticed....
