If the NZers were to be in as a seperate army, then it would make most sense to have the Maori Battalion. They were highly trained in bayonet charges, probably more so than any other Allied unit. General Sir Bernard Freyburg, the General Officer Commanding of the 2nd NZEF, commented "No infantry had a more distinguished record, or saw more fighting, or, alas, had such heavy casualties, as the Maori Battalion."
