The Melee Combat Thread

Knives: Maybe some of the generic knives could be replaced, fine otherwise
a german officer's dagger would be great

http://www.koliga.com/Merchant2/grap...1/dx-4115l.jpg
Shovel: more power. A shovel was basically a wide knife blade on a long
handle. Plus it needs a satisfying "clunk" http://forums.filefront.com/images/smilies/smilie.gif
Katana: 1 shot kill. I've taken Kendo one semester, and anyone trained with
a
Katana, as japanese officers undoubtably were, could certainly kill
or render a foe helpless with one blow, the targe areas are head,
throat, stomach/guts and arms.
Bayonets: i would really like to see these.

Feel free to add suggestions about melee combat!

Add the ability to use the butt of a rifle to beat the crap out the enemy, also if possible have the "Brutality" sound from Mortal Kombat play when you kill someone with it.

Smacking someone in the face with the butt of an M1 Garand would be cool. It could be coded as a right mouse button command similar to what the bayonet is like in Road to Rome. Although coding it and animating it would take some time and effort.

Finally someone else got it. Its not just like that to make new stuff, and especially not models and animations.

Else for melee I guess bayonets would be the most common addon for future FH releases

Re: The Melee Combat Thread

i don't know if new animations are possible, and if they are, i'm sure they're very difficult, but a rifle-butt attack would be cool.....

Re: The Melee Combat Thread

The BF1942 engine doesn't handle melee combat too well unfortunately. Even if you added all kinds of cool melee weapons and attacks it wouldn't remove the fact that melee sucks in BF. The difference to DoD and others is enormous.

Re: The Melee Combat Thread

you should try the sengoku mod exel.. that mod is amazing for melee combat. They did animations for sword slash and thrusts, and for spears, and they modified how the damge is to. So a slash does a lline of weaker damge, but a stab is single stronger thrust.

They also animated the complete reloading sequence for a muzzle loader, which is also in the mod. Its like a japanese samurai war mod basically.

Re: The Melee Combat Thread

The rifle butt, shovel, and samari sword should definetly do "slash damage" (as in, damage across an arc in front of the player) That would definetly take care of the issues regarded melee and BF.

The bayonet and knife should be stab weapons, but do much more damage.

Perhaps you could make an extra kit utility that is just melee functions of the main gun (ie, club and bayonet). You could stab with primary fire, and club with secondary. BF switches between weapons fast enough that it shouldnt be an issue to switch to melee mode when you run out of ammo or are going CQB.

Japanese officer bayonets were badly crafed blades, mass produced and weren't meant for combat, but more as a ceremonial thing

I agree about the shovel... you get hit good with the edge of one of those in the arm, chest, neck, or head, and you are as good as useless. You might be able to fight back if you get hit in the leg and don't bleed out quickly, but otherwise it sucks to be you.

Re: The Melee Combat Thread

I'm all for having more items to beat someone senseless with, but let's face it. The BF1942 isn't a great engine for melee combat. The only that takes longer than two guys trying to stab each other is two guys having a No 2 pistol duel...

Real-BadSeed February 20th, 2005 01:01 AM

Re: The Melee Combat Thread

i suggest much more damage for all melee weapons especially the shovel and katana..
and make it so, you hit the guy from a little farther away.
instead of having to be so close to your opponent, to hit him with a melee weapon..
this will greatly improve melee combat.

its almost hopeless to try and kill anyone at the moment...

average knife fight = 2 guys dance around until, one decides to reload his pistol an shoot the other.
or someone else shoots one of you...

exactly....if you hit someone with the blade of a shovel between the shoulder blade and the neck, they're instantly dead, face/head, neck and other areas are also not comfortable.....and it should have more range too. Anyone played Siege? it's a pretty cool medieval mod with plenty of close combat weapons that work well.

Who cares about melee combat, really? I believe most people just use it for humiliation (sneaking up behind that machine gunner or sniper that is guarding a crucial passageway and shouting "Fire!" before ripping him a few new holes is rather satisfying) or "duels/knife fights" (as a momentary distraction the main battle). As chances are very little one will run out of ammo or find that the knife is his last chance, I don't think we need to worry about it much.

To Finnish the wooden knife wich someone already modeled, did FH accepted it?

And to German paratroopers paratrooper's knife http://www.quanonline.com/military/m...vity_knife.jpg

Not entirely true. When I use the support kits (AT or LMG) I often use the knife in close combat situations with great effect when I run out of ammo.

COMPLETELY UTTERLY TOTALLY FALSE! Close combat is very frequent if you want to. If I have a rifle and end up in front of an enemy riflemen, I often take a knife. He either try to shoot my with is rifle (unsuccessfully, of course), takes is pistol (more effective) OR take a knife and there the true combat starts. Of course, knife fights are often very wierd..

Re: The Melee Combat Thread

we need a bit more range on knives, right now you have to be practicly inside some-one before it hits.

schoolkid February 20th, 2005 10:50 PM

Re: The Melee Combat Thread

Better yet, we need the commando knives from Secret Weapons. Looks like a normal knife, but it's not! Left click to throw your knife, right click to slash. You are guaranteed a kill ALWAYS, no matter where the knife hits. The knife throwing has a short range, but it's pretty fun to do. :)
