Umm......Hmmm...What about a new map!

Ummmmmmm.......................................... .................................................. .................................................. ........hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.................... ...................uhhhhhhhhhhh
Why isn't there a Pearl Harbor map?
Its not hard, you can make it a Battle of Brition map for the Japanese....They have to sink 3 battleships and destroy a factory......

:Japan Ordinance:
Class- All Pilots NO PARACHUTES!!!!!
2- Aircraft Carriers

:US Odinance:
Class-All Navy
3- Prince of Whales battleships
2 or 4- Fletcher class destroyers
Stationary AA guns
2- F4 Wildcats
Maybe a couple of Liberty ships....to make it look like Medical ships.

You can prevent the US ships from moving, by blockading the port.

Ummmm....why hasn't this been put in????

pearl harbor map?

no thanks

http://battlefield1942.filefront.com...l_Harbor;29649

where is the suprise element? you can be lucky the ships won't go out and destroy the aircraft carriers under intense lag

Re: Umm......Hmmm...What about a new map!

I think there are some fan made BC maps for Pearl Harbor so check some of the bf1942 sites that have maps. My mind went blank when I went to suggest some so hopefully someone will post the links.

Static carrier means no/less lag.

But still, no. Maybe IJNAC v. USN/USMC AA crews...

Re: Umm......Hmmm...What about a new map!

Pearl Harbor map wouldn't be that bad of an idea. The Japs wouldn't get a carrier - they'd spawn in planes midair, with the heavier bombers spawning later on, maybe ten-fifteen minutes after game starts to simulate second wave. US main defenses would be AA guns and machine guns on the ships. Maybe as an arcade element, give the US some fighters to dogfight with, etc.

Krazy Kommando January 24th, 2005 11:25 PM

Re: Umm......Hmmm...What about a new map!

^ yes.
giving them actual carries would increase the lag. i think if the planes all just spawn in 2 rows (fighters @ front, dive bombers in second row) already in the air it would be heaps cooler. would be no waiting for planes on the carrier, no n00bs sitting in the middle of the carrier and wondering why they get run over, no n00bs blowing up all the friendly planes, no traffic jams on the carrier deck. win in situation.
give the USA a few locked battleships & destroyers so they dont move them and lag the place up (might not be 100% realistic, but who really cares?), give them heaps of flak, 2 radar instalations, half a dozen fighter planes (but dont spawn TOO quickly).
would have to be objective based like btr & bob of course....

suggested before but since there is no element of supirse whatsoever it is kinda useless, unless ofcourse you you correct this by giving the americans 3 flak canons and a ship and the japs 40 planes :naughty: and that would suck aswell. So personally i can't see how this could work,

Re: Umm......Hmmm...What about a new map!

Guys, I have a near-complete version of Pearl Harbor that's been sitting dormant for more than a year. Unfortunately, the lag is unacceptable in my opinion for the amount of detail needed to "pull it off". You simply cannot have a clear blue sky with great view distances, the amount of ships, and the harbor statics and have the map playable on anything but the best computers. The map would need a lot of custom work to current content to complete the effect otherwise it will seem empty. All this work needs to be done before you can even think about how the map will play, which has always concerned me when I was given the map to 'finish'. The best I can do is have the team look at it and perhaps release it unofficially. But I certainly don't (and can't) expect any of them to do the work that is really needed.

Re: Umm......Hmmm...What about a new map!

hmmm...Pearl Harbor map wouldnt be that bad, IMO.

Just set the ships so they cant move (maybe shallow water:p), and give the Japs tons of planes, and the allies not that many AA-guns, mostly MGs...

:)

I think a Peral Harbour map could work. Of course it wouldn“t be nearly as dramatic as it should be, but the concept would still work.

And I personaly think it would be better than a map like Bombing the Reich...

I wouldn't mind seing it only if the the jap planes spawn midar not on a carrier, it would be hell on most pub servers.

Re: Umm......Hmmm...What about a new map!

Wouldn't the lag decrease if all american ships were unmovable and more like statics or did you already do that dime..?

Re: Umm......Hmmm...What about a new map!

make the boats a static with hps, and place manable AA guns around the boat. ie a 20mm here and there

terminal-strike January 25th, 2005 04:47 PM

Re: Umm......Hmmm...What about a new map!

This idea that its stupid because it 'wouldn't be suprise' and therefore cannot be done is itself stupid- because after the intial attack started it was a battle like any other.

Nobody says that a omha beach map could not be done or the pre-d day map airborne drop, or battle of bulge is unworkable because they are ' not a suprise then'. THat is ridiculous- the BF maps that deal with 'suprises' loose there 'suprise' somwhere between loading screen and the readme file.

Secondly, this idea that the map cannot be done because it cannot be historically accurate is outrageous- NO BF or FH map is 100%, or for that matter even CLOSE to being super historically accurate. To place such demands on a pearl harbor map is contradictory.

With a modicum of creativy most people can think of workable ways of the map happening, and any self respecting map maker can make there version of a pearl harbor map- and it could not only 'not suck' be fun to play. WHy? Because there is no binding correlation between real life and in BF.

I totally agree. As for framerate, don't give the Japanese any ships - let their planes spawn in midair (as has been said before). I believe this is historically accurate, as the Japanese planes left their carriers FAR far away from Pearl Harbor.

As for American ships, make them statics with hitpoints (like a factory in BoB or the carriers in Coral Sea). All that's needed is a few static battleships - I believe this too would be historically accurate, because, if I remember right, the US ships were trapped in the harbor after the Japanese sunk a ship at the harbor entrance, blocking it.

Even though the US didn't have too many planes in the air to fight the Japanese planes, just give us 2 or 3 to balance things out (and so US doesn't get bored of manning flak gun / machine gun all game). Voila - a good air combat map set in the Pacific (hopefully with a much better framerate).

Re: Umm......Hmmm...What about a new map!

You could always make it the second wave. Than the surprise problem wouldnt be a factor. You could add burning buildings and holes where bombs dropped, with maybe a static of a burning ship and the occasional wrecked Val.

pesci_fan January 25th, 2005 05:58 PM

Re: Umm......Hmmm...What about a new map!

First of all, why does it have to be the first wave of the attack that has to be the battle....?????
Try this....Make it like the second wave attack on Pearl....By this time the US was already beginning to defend itself.....

As for the ships...Why can't you make the water shallow?

Re: Umm......Hmmm...What about a new map!

i suppose you could make it so on US team you only start with just a knife (not even a pistol), and have to run to collect pilot kit, engineer kit, etc, from barracks or ships?

terminal-strike January 25th, 2005 06:21 PM

Re: Umm......Hmmm...What about a new map!

Well in the older full length movie based on pearl harbor - tora tora tora some ships do get underway. The one battleship that nearly sunk in the harbor entrance, did manage to get far out of the way though so it was not blocked. The main thing is not all the ships would need to be statics.

There was more then just planes, the japanese also attacked with little mini-subs, and they had other ships in the area, Inlcuding some submarines. There was also spies on the island itself too, though I don't know if they did any sabotage.

Anlushac11 January 25th, 2005 07:29 PM

Re: Umm......Hmmm...What about a new map!

There were 5 mini subs of which it seems two got into the harbor, and one actually made a torpedo attack on battleship row.

The Nevada did get underway but had to beached on Hospital point after it received the attention of the Jap strike force for getting underway.

A map of Pearl could also benefit with hitting the tool shops and fuel storage area. These targets were in the cancelled 3rd wave and if hit and knocked out would have done more damage than all the ships lost because they would have crippled Pearls ability to repair ships and equipment. The US Navys only heavy repair facilities would have then been in San Diego.

So in effect teh Japanese cancelled the oone part of the raid that would ahve had the most devestating results.

terminal-strike January 25th, 2005 08:18 PM

Re: Umm......Hmmm...What about a new map!

yea Iv never understood why they didn't do more follow up attacks, after the intial ones. I had never heard of the 3rd wave cancelling until now, but I mean even in general they could have stayed and done more attacks after the defenses were already weakened.

Iv done some digging- it would be reasonable to have a use destoryer fighting japanese submarines (maybe mini-if there done, regular ones as place holders maybe?)

There are a number of important events related to the Pearl Harbor raid that are not covered elsewhere in this presentation. Among them is the first shot of the Pacific War, fired by the destroyer USS Ward before dawn on 7 December 1941. Ward was patrolling in an restricted zone off the entrance to Pearl Harbor when the minesweeper Condor reported that she had spotted a submarine periscope at 3:42AM. Nearly three hours later, a PBY patrol plane also sighted a periscope and marked the spot with a smoke pot. Ward came over, fired her guns at the sub and dropped depth charges, reportedly sinking it.

This was one of five Japanese midget submarines that were attempting to enter Pearl Harbor to participate in the attack. The destroyer radioed a report of the incident to Pearl Harbor, another destroyer was ordered out to assist her, and Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Husband E. Kimmel was informed. However, presumably because hostile submarine activity around Hawaii was expected in the event of war, while air attack was not, Ward's incident, more than an hour before the Japanese planes arrived, did not occasion a general alarm.

They say it was the first shot, but IIRC the japanese attacked a US boat on river in china, in the late (38?) when they were fighting there. I forget where I read that now though. Anywya so maybe 3 main use spawns-- destroyer outsides, battle ship area (man ship aa, repair) and the airfield- aa and try to take off?

Some neat pics of the midget subs on there.

Dont worry, if we have that map in FH you can be sure that hordes of japanese smacktards will bail over Pearl Harbor and get into some APC just to ruin everyone's game.
