PBY Catalina Are we ever going to see the famous PBY Catalina flying boat? This would kick ass at midway, and maybe even Atlantic. They could be armed with 4 500 lb bombs, or a number of depth charges to sink subs. you could either build a dock for it, or make it a mobile SP like the Betty. The British also had a very large flying boat used to sink subs and cruisers, but I cant remember the name. mondo, job opportunity |
Re: PBY Catalina post any scrennie man! |
Re: PBY Catalina www.google.com Anyway I think it would be a good addition to Midway too, it was crucial to find ships and in game it can be used as an artillery spotter removing the swordfish on the PoW and I guess it can be used as a bomber or depth charger bomber (I really like the second one :) )... |
Re: PBY Catalina The British flying boat your refering to is called the Sunderland. |
Re: PBY Catalina There were some threads a while back about it, it was used by the 3 main western allied nations, US, Canada, Britain, and it saw action in the Atlantic and Pacific I think it should definitely go in as well. |
Re: PBY Catalina Lobo is working on one (or perhaps it's already finished). You'll see it one day, but probably not in 0.65. And it's been suggested before... |
Re: PBY Catalina It would be pretty neat to see. I got the chance to visit the Naval Air Museum this summer in Pensacol, Fl and saw 1. They also had a cut-away version of the fuselage. I tell you, that's one cramped thing. But it was really impressive, had its own little kitchen area and bunks and all. It was like a Flying-RV. Anyways, sorry about the semi-OT, it would be a pretty cool addition. If the Storch gets in, I say why not the PBY |
Re: PBY Catalina http://www.felixemeyer.de/bilder/vb303_catalina.jpgo. ok, good, thanks. heres a pic patilla |
Re: PBY Catalina What realistic and useful armement and uses would thie PBY and Sunderland have? Rescue rubber rafts for swimmers Torpedoes Sea Mines Depth charges Sonar Artillery spot Tail gunner |
Re: PBY Catalina It has been modelled. |
Re: PBY Catalina me no thinka torpeda |

Japanese H6K and H8K planes would be a nice addition. The Italians probably have a cool flying boat or two as well. |
Re: PBY Catalina ive never seen torps on a cat, maybes mod |
Re: PBY Catalina What roles did PBYs and similar planes fill? Recon, Maritime patrol (armed)? Pilot rescue? |
Re: PBY Catalina anti ship and anti submarine. fleet patrol, pilot rescue, laison. |
Re: PBY Catalina Yup Black Cat PBY's were used with great success in the Pacific. Most Jap merchant ships had no radar and very few destroyers did. And the Japanese did not have a credible night fighter force so the Balck Cats operated almost with impunity. By painting the aircraft black they were very hard to spot at night even with searchlights and by throttling back on the attack run the Black Cats were very hard to detect audibly over the ships own noises. As far as I know most carried a aerial torpedo under each wing. I do believe there were some that carried 2 x 500lb bomb under each wing and used skip bombing tactics to attack. Heres some nice Black Cat pics http://www.daveswarbirds.com/blackcat/photo4.htm |
Re: PBY Catalina did they have some sort of modified hardpoint to carry torpedoes? ive never seen a PBY-5A Cat with torps on them. |
Re: PBY Catalina Quote:
It looks like the torpedo/depth charges required a different rack than the bombs. Pics of PBY's with torps are as rare as P-47's with rockets Battle of Midway, June 1942 Pilots of the four Patrol Squadron 24 (VP-24) and Patrol Squadron 51 (VP-51) PBY-5A "Catalina" patrol bombers that flew the torpedo attack mission against the Japanese fleet's Midway Occupation Force during the night of 3-4 June 1942. Those present are (left to right): Lieutentant (Junior Grade) Douglas C. Davis, of VP-24; Ensign Allan Rothenberg, of VP-51; Lieutenant William L. Richards, Executive Officer of Patrol Squadron 44 (VP-44), who flew in a VP-24 aircraft on this mission; and Ensign Gaylord D. Propst, of VP-24. http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/e...way/mid-1m.htm |
Re: PBY Catalina I posted another thread without realising that this thread was posted. However, it does have a bunch of screenshots that the FH team can use: http://www.gamingforums.com/showthread.php?t=153540 |
Re: PBY Catalina Actually, this plane is already modeled. I think the skin is nearing completion, so our dreams are fufilled. Now, for an Fw200 and a Sunderland... |

Re: PBY Catalina OH MY DEAR SWEET GOD! ANLUSHAC I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!! Lets keep trying my luck... B-24 Liberator? Pe-2 Attack Bomber? Il2-3M 37mm Sturmovik? |
Re: PBY Catalina Quote:
http://forgottenhope.bf1942files.com.../Liberator.jpg There has been a request for a Pe-2 put forth. The Il-2 we have is the early model. To be accurate the Il-2M and M3 need the leading edge of the wings swept back. As for the Il-2M3 with the 37mm guns, that could be done very easily. |
