BBC NEWS | UK | WWI veteran Patch dies aged 111

Harry Patch, the last Tommy from the Great War, has died at the age of 111. He was the last British soldier to fight in the trenches, and thus his death signals the passing of his generation - the Tommies of Flanders, Gallipoli and the Somme. His death follows that last week of the world's oldest man and fellow WWI veteran at the age of 113.

Damn I thought the man that died last week was the last surviving man who fought in WWI. RIP.

I do think there may be a handful more that were simply undocumented. There were kids fighting too, either way I guess he was the last then... I love old people and their stories. Its amazing to think about the fact that when those men were children, there may have been a few people around that were born in the 1700's and also that when those individuals were children, they may have known someone from the late 1600's!!! maybe, the potential is there anyway. As a child I knew a few people who were from the late 1800's including my great grandfather. I think he was born in the 1890's. My direct grandfather who passsed in 1994 was born on 2/2/02. Both men had the greatest stories...

Another one? 2009 is a harsh year on the WW1 veterans :uhm: About a week ago I was reading about this guy, almost makes the name look familiar..

Well, let him rest in peace, he atleast deserves it after so many years.

I do remember this story about a 15 year old kid who fought in WW1, he died in battle and his grave is located somewhere in Belgium and it's quite popular because he was so young, both for pacifists and armchair generals.

I've stood at his grave and it was covered in those little poppy crosses. It was one of the most moving places I've ever been to.
