| My god...what have we done. As a human race, we have caused this! They're moving in invasion of Australia. Europe has fallen to their grasp. England is holding out, but even there, the invasion has taken a beachhead! This is our fault! OUR FAULT! We facilitated their spread! it is we who fed and shepherded them, and allowed them to take to our streets and cities! THE RECKONING IS NIGH! BBC - Earth News - Ant mega-colony takes over world BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Super ant colony hits Australia BBC News | SCI/TECH | Ant supercolony dominates Europe BBC NEWS | Science & Environment | Ant invader knocks on UK's door BBC NEWS | Science & Environment | Alien invaders: The next generation They've even allied with another age old enemy of the humans, and yet another enemy that we have unknowing helped to their new powers! | You spelt nigh wrong. I don't see this being too serious to animal wildlife. The only remarkable thing about these ants are that they recognize each other. Deprived of this method of population control, the population of ants will obviously grow slightly larger than would normally be feasible, however, other controls such as food scarcity, disease, predation, and climate will all have a larger impact due to the greater population of ants, with the end result being that the population of ants will still remain static. Unless the ants evolve into something resembling intelligence and greatly increase the carrying capacity of the ecologies within which they are living (as humans have done) I don't see any way of them 'taking over' the earth or anything so drastic. |

| Hush you<_< I can't edit it x3 Actually, its quite interesting imo that we're seeing natural selection at work, as a single colony continuously out competes the other ant colonies, and thus is slowly taking over. It makes an interesting study in evolutionary science to see how this colony develops, and if it will fracture, or continue to stay as a viable, continuous colony.

| You know, I read that article earlier today, and the comments of the quoted scientists made me feel as if I was being scolded by teacher. But more than that, the remarks left me feeling that the scolding scientists actually enjoyed taking that self-righteous and superior attitude. Sheesh! And btw, "nigh" seems to be spelled perfectly correctly in von Mudra's post. You must have imagined the spelling error, Mr. P!

Um...yes! Of course it was! Jeez, what was I thinking? <smacks Pedantic> <straightens kravat> Now then, yes, it does seem to lay the blame on us oddly enough for ant populations forming into a single colony...kinda...odd. But more interestingly, if this single colony of ants is taking over, and they're all this "Argentinian Ant", doesn't that mean that eventually other Ant species will be out competed, and brought to extinction?
