"Happy" Anniversary? Well, I know what you mean.

I heard "Taps" sounded (it's never "played" apparently) at the ceremony. Goose pimples.

edit - THIS will give you goose pimples too: Obama took several D-Day vets with the presidential party as honored guests. Jim Norene, was one of these. He jumped with the 502nd PIR of the 101st Airborne. I think most of you will recognize that unit as Easy Company's regiment in Band Of Brothers. He and the other vets were to appear with Obama today at the ceremony marking the 65th anniversary. Yesterday he went to the US cemetery in Normandy one more time to see his comrades who had died on D-Day and in the weeks after in Normandy. After his visit he went to his hotel and then to sleep.

Jim Norene died in his sleep last night, and was reunited at last with his brothers in arms who rested just a short distance away.

"Happy" is hardly the word to describe it, but I guess in a way it's fitting because there's always great stuff on TV on June 6... so in a way it has turned into a sort of "happy" holiday just because of the great entertainment available.

Yep, I enjoy it too, but it's hard to watch the soldiers cheering as they run full speed up a nice sandy beach. Cheering - yeah, like that happened.

Oh, you might know this bit of trivia about Richard Todd. He plays then-Major John Howard, who led the Ox and Bucks in the glider attack to capture the bridge over the Caen canal near Bénouville, now known as Pegasus Bridge of course. In the movie, he's the British officer you see in a glider, and we hear a voice-over repeating his orders about the bridge: "Hold until relieved. Hold until relieved!"

The neat thing is in real life Howard was an officer in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and actually was part of the force which fought to hold the Pegasus Bridge on D-Day! And Todd is still alive IIRC.
