Twas the night before Christmas and all throught the house...
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse
Mom at the whorehouse and Dad smoking grass, i'd just settled down for a nice piece of ass
When out on the lawn I saw a big dick
I knew right away it must be Saint Nick
He came down the chimney like a bat outta hell
I knew for certain the fucker had fell
He filled all our stockings with pretzels and beer
And a big rubber dick for my brother the queer
He rose up the chimney with a thunderous fart... the son of a bitch blew the chimney apart
He swore and he cussed as he rode out of sight: Piss on you all and have a bitch of a night!

:)

You're wrong. I for one celebrate christmas with the remembrance of our (swedish) old pagan holiday this day which goes a long way back, older than jesus.

When my grandfather says sinterklaas it is pronounced almost exactly like Santa Claus.

wahh?! are you norwegian or swedish? AFAIK, you say "God Jul" only in sweden and norway.

a swedish tradition is at 3 P.M every christmas eve (24th of december) the msot standard tv-channel (also the oldest swedish channel, simply called "1") shows one hour of disney cartoons, and it's always the same cartoons. starting of with this:

following (without the intro and with swedish subtitles + voices)

and a real classic

and it continues like this, chip & dale, more donald duck, goofy and mickey mouse.

there you go, just thought I'd share you some swedish traditions, these disney-cartoons are being watched every year by the majority of swedish people, i would guess 4-6 million (9 million total)

British TV (BBC1) on Christmas Day always has Walace and Gromit, the Queens speech and a very unhappy episode of Eastenders. Usually there is The Great Escape, but for this year (like last year) its the Lion the Witch and Wardrobe.

Is having turkey on Christmas a European tradition? Here in the USA it's more strongly associated with the Thanksgiving holiday.

I'd say yes, christmas is the only time I ever have roast turkey. Traditionally it used to be goose but they are difficult to get hold of these days. Good roast potatos are still cooked in goose fat though.

We don't have thanksgiving.

Hmmmm. I don't think I have enough time to really do it justice before I'm supposed to go to my parent's house for our traditional Christmas Eve there.

But I'll tell you this. This is usually a time when most people are happy and look forward to being with their families. It is for me.

But because I love Christmas so much I can't help but think about the folks for whom Christmas isn't a happy time. Maybe it's just a year or two that's tough. Or maybe it's always been that way because of various family dynamics. You have my sympathy. I am sorry, and I feel for you. Perhaps family members fight, or maybe the presents are skimpy. Maybe it's a time when you're reminded of some loss or lack in your life.

When you get down to it though, those things aren't really what Christmas is about. And even if you miss out on some of the good stuff doesn't mean you have to hate Christmas, or feel like you were left out. Because you weren't.

I believe this with all my heart: to celebrate Christmas is not to give presents or eat or see family, although we've made those a part of it - it's to celebrate the birth of the Son of God on earth. Jesus was God's gift to us. God knows the hurt and the need in every one of us. He knows the pain and the ache and those things which make us feel like we'll never be whole. And because of that he sent us His Son. That's the thing about Christmas for me that puts a lump in my throat every time. God loved us, every single one of us, so much that He sent His Son to die on our behalf, so that we don't have to. Think about that: sending your son to suffer and die for someone else. That my friends is more love than we'll ever know anywhere on earth.

That is what you should take from Christmas, and that is what makes every Christmas good, even though someone else may try to make it bad for you. How can it be bad when you realize, however else you might suffer, God loved you more than anyone on earth has ever loved you or ever will?

Sorry, it wasn't my purpose to start a sermon. But it by golly makes me happy to think of it. Merry Christmas, brothers. I love every one of you.

You may return to your regularly scheduled secular holiday celebration. ;)

Re: Merry Christmas!!!

While I may not be an avowed christian, I still have to agree with Jummy. The part of me that does believe in a god (which is tentivily stronger then the part that doesn't) still believes in the idea that Jesus was a son of god, and a prophet on earth. Its why I still celebrate christmas with my family, as I see it as simply a part of Yule :)

I myself believe Christmas is still a Roman/Germanic holiday which was later used to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The Church couldn't stop the pagans from celebrating so they made it a Christian holiday.
Christmas trees are from the Germanic culture AFAIK.

Regarding the Christmas tree itself, Chambers notes that it
seems to be a very ancient custom in Germany, and is probably a remnant of the splendid and fanciful pageants of the middle ages.[4]
Quote:

The custom of putting up a Christmas tree can be traced to 16th century Germany, though neither an inventor nor a single town can be identified as the sole origin for the tradition, which was a popular merging of older traditions mentioned above; in the Cathedral of Strasbourg in 1539, the church record mentions the erection of a Christmas tree.
:) (I have my presents already =p).

Edit:
oh and in sweden we don't eat turkey... we never eat a turkey, other than in slices on sandwiches sometimes.
typical swedish food is potatoes, meatballs, a big boiled ham, "janssons frestelse" (translation: Janssons temptation), Lutfisk (combination of different fish), Sill (herring).
