| @FlyGuy: There's a myth that if true, would put the CSA practically on White House grounds (as in Lincoln's horse trail or something like that). The myth is that a Confederate guy hid along the trail, and attempted to shoot Lincoln on his morning ride. He would miss, possibly going through the hat. Fantastic find. I thought Sherman was farther south than he had actually gone, and I didn't really know about many of the beachheads other than New Orleans.

| the confederates made several pushes well into the north, in fact, the two bloodiest battles in american history were fought in the north: Sharpsburg (known in the north as the battle of Antietam Creek) in Maryland (fun fact, the bloodiest day in american history with 23,000 casualties on both sides, comparable to the total american losses on Iwo Jima), and of course, Ghettysburg, the single bloodiest battle in american history with 50,000 dead or wounded. however, the south did have a generally defensive strategy, as it required less output of industry and manpower. ironic as those filthy traitors started it.

| You also have to remember that the US only annexed the current western US in 1846 - 1848. That's only 15 years before the Civil War broke out.

| It was also interesting to see a relatively long 'stalemate' near the start of the war. The animation showed a little fighting along the border of the North and Confederate lines, but then they seemed to stop fighting for several weeks/months. I really like this presentation of the war. Awesome find! |

| Fighting tended to slow in the winter as heavy rains turned roads into a cold muddy impassable mess.

| THe CSA got very close to Washington in late 1864, when General Early led a raid against Washingtion DC, but was stopped at the forts. That one way up north attack was a when a CSA guerrilla cav group went up that way.

| Some of the battles away from the front lines involved partisans and raiders, especially in Missouri. Missouri actually saw more battles than any other state during the Civil War, although no major battles were fought there.

| Mud March (American Civil War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) Joshua Chamberlain(Famous Medal of Honour winner, led the charge that saved Little Round Top at Gettysburg, and rose to the rank of Major General), spoke of actually seeing a horse drown in the mud during this march in his book Passing of the Armies.
