You have some insight into not only Tom Cruise, but how the American movie industry works as well. Truth and historical fact alone don't make a good enough story, and Tom Cruise can't just be a protagonist, even a hero; he must be a messiah figure, or at least a human of some higher order. (The Last Samurai as Exhibit 1. But I will give him credit for Collateral, although even there he plays the world's best at what he does.)

The real Stauffenberg story is great as it is: he knowingly sacrificed himself to try to save something of Germany. But he and almost all of the other Valkyrie conspirators (most of whom were nobility whose forbears had been soldiers for centuries) only truly objected to Hitler when he began losing...and because der Fuehrer was such a horrid little proletarian, don't you know.

But if Cruise plays Stauffenberg, the movie will ignore the fact he campaigned for Hitler in '32-'33 in the race for the chancellorship, and therafter joined the SA brownshirts. A Cruise movie will overlook the significant evidence that Stauffenberg and Company didn't have any real problems with Hitler about all those nasty Jews and untermenschen.*

All the inconvenient, unpleasant truths will be lost, and what will emerge will be a heroic myth... the usual role for St. Thomas The Closeted Psycho.

*Please don't bother counter-citing a Wikipedia article or any of the German sites which ( taking a lesson from the French, who, because of their shame in their country's historical performance in the war, grossly exaggerated the number of its resistance fighters in order to create a new national myth of heroism and thus restore some postwar pride in their nation) take it as an article of religious faith that Stauffenberg was moved to action by The Holocaust. There just is no real evidence of it. There is, on the other hand, real evidence of his anti-Semitism and his lack of concern over the fate of the Jews. He decided to act when it became clear Hitler would lose and would destroy Germany. The reason he was furious at Hitler was because of how he berated the nobility and professional soldiers. He thought Hitler's genocide merely kind of "tacky".

The German goverment has disallowed filming of this film in Germany, because tom is a scientologist.

As much as i dont like Tom, i dont think thats right. His religion has nothing to do with the film.

i just hate the poor bastard, he can't act and has short mans syndrome: where little people have to play the head honcho in all films they do to make themselves appear more intimidating than they really look. Except in Top Gun where he played Val Kilmer's bitch.

Actually, Germany has the same basic religious freedoms in its constitution as most other western nations. It's just that scientology is not seen as religion by the German government, but as a "money-making cult".

im with with our law this time. some where must be a line where not every cult is tolerated as a religion. and when the family says no to an actor who is in such a cult, it must be accepted. but anyways, i doubt they will tolerate the opinion of the family and still film this movie in the states with cruise.

Sure is. When the money 'dontated' by a member hits certain milestones they get to find out more about Hubbard's writings. Sounds a little crude, I know, but give them a few more centuries. Once they've got their network of buildings up, many named in St.Tom's honor, of course, people will be lining up to donate their cash. Of course that is if they survive the surge in popularity of the the Church of the FSM. Could go either way, really.

Yeah but how does this have anything to do with making a movie? And how can they justify not allowing the making of a movie, because one member of the cast is in a religion that isnt recognized by the german goverment.

I still dont see the connection thats my point. And i still think its not right, the movie isnt been made by scientologists is it?

I have to agree with scientololy not being recongnized as a religion by the German goverment but what does that have to do with the making of this film? I mean, if I believe in the religious order of the "holy micronesian camel krops god" why should that stop me from making a movie?

Unless they didn't got permission for other reasons and the above reason is just a cry for attention...
