20 round clip for Thompson?
 

I have heard that it was used more, cause the 30 round clip was prone to malfunctioning and also 20 clip was that what brits only used for their thompson?

True, clips that were loaded with 30 rounds used to fall out of the weapon very often. I'm all for implementing 20 round clips and 30 round clips loaded with 20 rounds.

Lets get that military terminology right....Someone will take your head off for calling that magazine a "clip"...

I always wanted to fire a thompson with the big drum magazine. Our department actually had several when I joined in '68, but they were rapidly phased out in favor of more modern weapons.

I recall from shooting the M3 "grease gun" while in the army that the 30-round magazine was a bear to load with 30. You had to use a mechanical loading device to apply enough pressure to get the last rounds in. This may explain why GIs in the field only loaded 20; easier to carry a few extra magazines that try to stuff 'em full.

I doubt they were prone to falling out. The drum magazine was alot heavier and I've never heard of it falling it.

Soldiers could carry what they want when it came to ammo. I'm guessing many would pop a 30 round mag in the gun when stocking up at a depot but then carry all 20 rounders if they weren't going to be able to reach a depot for awhile.

Yes agreed. Another question I have is the russian ppsh being remodelled? I CERTAINLY hope so. That piece.. is spraying out bullets...

The PPSH sprays out bullets because thats exactly what it did...

Yeah, they way nerfed that thing for .65. Its effictive range, meaning the distance at which as soldier could hit his mark 50% of the time (forget target size) was 200 yards. It may have been large and heavy, but it was very accurate.

And yes, 30 round magazine would fall out.

The 20 and 30 rd magazines are prone to falling out. That is why when you see someone load a magazine of that type onto a Thompson they slap the bottom of the magazine up with the palm of their hand. This is intended to make sure the magazine would not fall out; it is also a procedure that the Tec. manual for the smg recommends. The reason you never heard of a drum magazine falling out of the Thompson is that the M1928A1 version was designed to hold either the drum or the stick magazine. Whereas the M1A1 version that was design in WWII was only setup to take the stick magazine. The M1928A1 has a slot where the drum is slide in sideways onto the smg whereas the stick is push up and is only held in place by a small tab. I know this because I have experienced a magazine fall right off of it while firing. Also most soldiers in the field only loaded 28 rounds into the 30 rd magazine because the magazine spring tended to become weak after extend periods of time loaded out completely.
