Those are what I meant by Worms, you can see your goddamn opponent in every game suggested! And they're 2D to boot, in real life artillery was about more then simply aiming up and down Oh and Comrade? DONT SHOOT!

Here are the pictures, just don't kill me!
First one: Magnetic Rose by Kouji Morimoto, behind Robotech and Macross; The story of a group of space salvagers, following an urgent SOS, which leads them deep inside a mysterious ship containing the memories of a mysterious woman... (This is considered the best one, and I definitely see why)
Second one: Stinkbomb, by Tensai Okamuro, the man behind Kikaider and Wolfs Rain; The story of a simple (and not necessarily simple in the ordinary way if you know what I mean) man working at a pharmacy, who accidentally turns himself into a human bioweapon, and starts headed straight for Tokyo!
And of course: Cannonfodder, by Katsuhiro Ôtomo, the man behind Akira, himself!; A day in the life of a city thats sole purpose is firing cannons at the enemy. (Definitely not the prettiest or longest anime, it makes me want to wash my hands every time I watch it, the whole thing seems grimy in every way, but it is very philisophical and spiritual, and that's what I think anime is truly about)
Edit* jeez I found some pics but they didnt show up when it posted, here's the link to where I got them from
