Every year there's a big gun show in my area. It's a fun thing to go to if you're into old rifles and don't mind people trying to recruit you into various militias or trying to convince you that the South never really lost the American Civil War. That's what I get for living in South Carolina, though. The sellers normally have plenty of SKSs, Saiga ripoffs, semi-auto AK variants, sport shooters, shotguns, etc but the main reason I go is that they have plenty of WWII rifles.
Some guy comes every year and sets up a table full of arisakas that he's trying to sell. I've looked them over but I can't bring myself to be interested in a rifle that I'd be afraid to fire.
At the beginning of the summer I bought an M1 Garand from someone at the gun show. It shoots great; I managed to hit an entire clip in a pretty small area at 100 yards. Plus it uses 30.06 which is pretty common, unlike the 8mm rounds I need for my K98 (it's either pay $1 American per bullet for commercial rounds or try to find surplus).
If you really can't find ammo then try www.gunbroker.com. It's like the firearms version of ebay. I got 700 rounds of 8mm ammo for $60, which is insane considering commercial rounds are about $1 per round and even surplus ammo will cost about 25 cents per shot.
My friend is in the market for an M91/30 sniper, which is pretty rare; even finding a completely original M91/30 sniper is lucky, not to mention being able to afford the one you find. While standard rifles were constantly supplied by the factories sniper rifles had to be ordered individually, and the stock had to be cut differently to fit the scope mount screws and a curved bolt handle had to be installed to replace the straight bolt handle; converting an M91/30 into an M91/30 sniper is a factory-type job. A standard M91/30 is a nice rifle though, though one that I haven't had an opportunity to fire.
I'd like to thank people for pointing me in the direction of 7.62mmx54mmR, which it turns hour means rimless.
I will be using www.gunbroker.com to find proper ammo for rare guns.

I've never even seen a MAS36, but if one could be found that wasn't hazardous to your health, I would be all about it.
And I'm not surprised those Arisakas are dangerous, they were dangerous when they were made in 44.
Also I've noticed a lot more M44s then M91s sitting around. The Cleveland International Gun Something or Something show is coming in August, so I'm getting on top of that. You can get a box of 20 rounds of 7.62x54R for 14.99$ from Winchester direct, which is pretty steep, but it's new ammo and won't misfire. Still looking for some surplus.
