Anyone seen the movie Battle of the Bulge?

Am I the only one that thought this movie was wierd?
I didn't feel like WWII what so ever, it felt like some half assed battle with cheap tanks.
I'm no tank expert, but what kinda shit tiger tanks were they? They looked like some russian tank with a quick coat of 'JOE'S PREMIUM QUICK DRY GREY PAINT'
Unless someone can proove me wrong i'd like to know if it was a tiger or not,
who shoots a tank with a 30. cal aswell? bit of a donut aint he?
charles bronson just makes me laugh, what a ledgend.
that tank commander geezer looked cool what's his name, OH and what the hell was that singing for, i bursted out in laughter when it's was all quiet around the young tank crew boys then all of a sudden a guy sings 'Obbbbbbbbb's sturmt oder schneit'
What's that song called/ about?
and what's with the cheap tanks and cheap fat men shooting at cheap tanks with cheap 30.cals

:nodding: Yeah I've seen that movie and was wondering the same thing.
And what about the German lines.
I cant write it in german but they always say the same thing..."It came from over there" ..over and over again....

Nuts(really happened) hehe that is an old movie, i really dont think they have the budget to have those real tanks , i didnt think it was that bad , if they had the equipment they have today it would be much better.

Re: Anyone seen the movie Battle of the Bulge?

Why did they leave their tanks anyway, they had a whole field of 'tigers' against 2 other american tanks, then they all gave up

Re: Anyone seen the movie Battle of the Bulge?

One of the things that sort of makes me mad about some of the old WWII movies is the way they portray the germans as being stupid in a way, don't get me wrong I still enjoy a lot of the films, but I think the germans have been very wrongly portrayed in some of these films. I haven't seen Battle of the Bulge, but I've heard that it isn't that great.

What's that song called/ about?

It's the famous panzer-lied (tank-song).

EDIT: O yeah, battle of the Bulge -> Worst ww2 movie, ever.

Das Panzerlied is the best German tanker song ever. I listen to it while driving my German armor across the FH landscape.

The German "Tigers" were M-47 Patton tank.

The US tanks were M-24 Chaffee's.

Yes, it's an impresseive march :) I used to play it as a kid with my piano teacher (who knows a lot about WW2), but some neighbours didn't like that because they remember the orignial lyrics :)

Well, the film Iron Cross does make an exception, even tho it's US (?) production. Great film. I guess so does Stalingrad too. Have it in my DVD shelf, but have not yet dared to watch it due to idiotic dubbing! God.. Why the fuck must they ruin films, that are aimed for people who have learnt to read already by dubbing them? Who the hell want's to listen germans, who would originally speak german in the film, "speak" english with ze german accschent over the original soundtrack. Terrible! Why could have they just not added subtitles, I'd think that would have been easier too.

Not only that, theres a long text, lenght of few sentences, in the very start of the film, in german, and they have not even bothered to translate that.

Bring me the head of publisher company CEO.

Cross Of Iron was a German Production shot in Yugoslavia with some American and English actors and IIRC dealt with the withdrawl and evacuation of Sevastapol.

I do remember almost crying with joy that the Russians in the film actually had T34's.

Re: Anyone seen the movie Battle of the Bulge?

Oh, really? I thought it was US or English production because of all the english actors. Well, that explains it..

I might go watch it once again now..

Found some information about the movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074695/
Don't care about the review though, most reviews on that page aren't very good :)

You should definitely check it out. One of the best war movies I've seen. The special effects aren't anything like in SPR or so, but it's 25 years older too and who cares about them anyway, if the movie is good. It's very realistic, they've even taken into account the wide use of PPsH's with german soldiers. There are also some T34/85's present too in few scenes..

The plot, as Anlushac said, is about germans soldiers withdrawing from russia at the end of the war.

The english spoken with english accent by some german soldiers bothered a bit, but that's just a minor thing. Glad they didn't try to use a german accent.

Definitely worth checking. It's got some informative value too.

Re: Anyone seen the movie Battle of the Bulge?

The panzer commander is Robert Shaw who was in many films including that one and I was suprised to find out he was that old sea dog bloke in Jaws who ends up being the last person to be eaten in the first film. And yes, watching the film on Easter monday although I only saw the last 25 minutes or so(thank god!) and it is terrible, although it's so bad it's good. I watched it on holiday in German and it was still bad to look at visually with modern(at the time) tanks and all.

Re: Anyone seen the movie Battle of the Bulge?

Correct me if Im wrong here but I always lived under the impression that the BOB took place in the Winter (hence every other portrayal of the battle, in films, games, tv series etc. being in Winter with very deep snow) whereas this film rather strangely seems to be taking place in the middle of a desert...
Hmm

Re: Anyone seen the movie Battle of the Bulge?

Ok to begin with, those arent tigers in the movie, they were rare then, and there rare now. Next the reason why they abandoned the tanks, if you were listening, was because they ran out of gas, you cant run a tank without gas, especially gas guzzlers like KT's. The song is the Panzerlied, a timeless classic, and the reason why they seem to be in a snowless land is because they are on an arid plateau in the final battle, the snow is either gone or jsut frost by that time of the day, ITS STILL COLD.

Anyway you cant possibly a classic movie from 30 years ago to a modern movie, we have computer generated special effects, they buried (small) explosives in the ground to simulate explosions. Thats just an iddiodic comparison.

But u look at films like The Longest Day and A Bridge Too Far. They must be at least (or approaching) 30 years old, and they're far superior to BotB. It just looks cheap and half arsed all the way through.

Re: Anyone seen the movie Battle of the Bulge?

The most comic bit was when they used Pattons [for memory] as King Tigers.

The best bit in an otherwise dreadful movie was "panzer lied" being sung :)

Re: Anyone seen the movie Battle of the Bulge?

Im sure the people of the day (not sure when the movie was made) had no clue what a King Tiger or Tiger looked like. But obviously they gave the illusion that the american 'shermans' got destroyed rather quick. Although we would like to see a real KT be used but can you just think how much money it would be just to use one and get a crew to actually learn to drive it.

I can only imagine what those Americans musta went through.

"Hey Joe what the hell is that thing???"
"Holy *************!!!!!!!"

Is about the only thing I could think when they first saw a King Tiger and watch there shots just bounce off.

Longest day is made in 1962 and A bridge too far is made in 1977

BotB was filmed in 1965 and apparently was a Dino Delaurentis movie. Thats all the reason I need as to why it is inaccurate and overdramatic.

Re: Anyone seen the movie Battle of the Bulge?

if I remember correctly, Iron Cross is set to 43, before introduction of T34/85! And it is my guess that the same batch of T34/85 was used in Stalingrad in the attempted russian break in in the kettle.
