Paasky June 25th, 2007 11:31 AM

Not the shadowwork folder though? I've just been copy-pasting everything everywhere justin case :p

Lobo June 25th, 2007 11:52 AM

I have it there too (I don't remember if it's needed but it doesn't hurt), but you need it in your map Textures folder and all will work.

I told you I love the BF2 shadows work?

Paasky June 25th, 2007 12:47 PM

Okey-doke. It only took 22h to create the textures, and that was on our 2003 PC, and this one is mid 2005 technology, so I guess I could live one day without my PC... :(

Now I just have to figure out how to move the sun...

EDIT: Just the two maps I had thought of creating for FH2, both from Abyssinia:
Amba Alagi:

Keren, the black line is a railroad:

Italy vs Commonwealth, including the Indian Empire, South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana. Ethiopian, Free French and Free Belgian forces also fought on the Allied side.

Natty Wallo June 26th, 2007 04:21 AM

You must rotate the skybox..... if the sun comes behiond the mountain, then just raise the skybox with the height value in SkyandSun.con.............

Paasky June 26th, 2007 05:01 AM

Nah, some good old trial & error for the win!
After 9 tries with the suns position, I managed to get it pretty perfect. The shadows are nice and long, and I realized that by giving BF a Below Normal process priority in task manager I can continue surfing & watching Yes ,Ministers ;) It's about 60% atm, and the things it has completed look perfect.

Natty Wallo June 26th, 2007 05:36 AM

Are you telling me that instead of rotating the skybox in the .con file, you render new shadows instead?.....

oh my....

Real-BadSeed June 26th, 2007 07:39 AM

Thats the best way to learn what everything does, by trail and error imo. Bet you understand what everything is doing now much better. :D

Hey, I found a sunset and I'll be damned if I won't be using it the way I want to! :curse:

Next thing to do is lightmap Lebanon & Saaremaa (oh dear...)

Natty Wallo June 26th, 2007 12:07 PM

lol ..."ok"... allthough the sunset would still be there if you just added, or removed 180 to the sky rotate line in the .con file..

Up is not equal to north in bf-maps, just so you know... so its not going to change the world order..

but hey, post images of your new, shadowed and lightmapped map!

Paasky June 26th, 2007 12:43 PM

!!!! Now bf just randomly told me that it couldn't draw direct3d... I got upto 04x06 (04x07 hasn't got a texture). I'll be doing the rest with bc42, unless I can make the .bat understand which files I want to render (?)

And no, I won't let this stupid *%$*!€+* game win! My way or the highway! :curse: It's a matter of principle: if I let BF win this time, what's next? Me installing Vista?

Paasky June 26th, 2007 01:59 PM

Ha! Got it! I just cut & paste the texture files for the already done blocks, and now it's doing 05x00-07x05! You'll be seeing a shadowed map tomorrow :)

Lobo June 27th, 2007 09:33 AM

I love your rants against the poor engine, haha

:curse:

Paasky June 27th, 2007 10:33 AM

EDIT: Guinea_Bay_rev.rar - FileFront.com

Ha, I won over the engine ;)

Natty Wallo June 28th, 2007 04:22 AM

Now run the lightmap .bat :D

Paasky June 28th, 2007 04:37 AM

The what now?

Natty Wallo June 28th, 2007 08:20 AM

- Make a new notepad file

- Paste this into it:
@cd C:\Program\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942
@c:
"C:\Program\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\BF1942.exe" +game fht6 +workingFolder "C:\Program\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\ShadowWork\" +traceObjectShadows "bf1942\levels\fht_Battle_of_Imphal-1944\"

-change the path so it finds your game, change map name to you map.

-Rename the notepad file into; Armins-Lightmaps.bat

- double click it

You need to have .samples files in your C:\Program\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\StandardMesh folder, every object that can have lightmaps need its own .samples file..

Real-BadSeed June 28th, 2007 09:03 AM

Hes talking about making the shadows on your buildings and other objects, like the shadow of a tree against the side and stuff. Also darker on one side and lighter on the sun side. All your buildings have no shadowing on them.

And hes right you need the .samples for that

The engine is a nasty guy, push harder, he is still alive

Paasky June 28th, 2007 11:16 AM

And how would I get these .samples then? By whacking at the game some more and hoping something comes out?

Lobo June 28th, 2007 11:40 AM

Try a loving aproach, haha

Download the FH moders pack (it has samples of FH and BF42 statics), I know there are more missing samples posted in this forum. And there is also a tool called samplesmaker to create new ones if you make custom statics

jumjum August 15th, 2007 09:53 AM

Paasky, are these maps still in beta?

Big A August 15th, 2007 10:24 AM

Any progress, as he said, anything? =p

Danger X August 15th, 2007 02:50 PM

I am extremely curious too!

jumjum August 15th, 2007 05:46 PM

I found them here: Paasky's Mappack â1 - FileFront.com

For what it's worth, only Desert Blitz is SP, but it has terrain which is absolutely unique in BF42 to my knowledge, and is lot of fun. Couldn't say about the others.

mydjinny August 16th, 2007 06:04 AM

When I saw mappack release, i looked for jumjum cuz I knew he'd say what I was looking for....Enough reason to START DOWNLOADING

Pitty about the others...But God knows FH1 needs a good desert map. Only Desert rose and kasserine are worth playingf these days

Big A August 16th, 2007 06:22 AM

Well, Flood Valley looks to be great if it has servers/sp. Gembloux gap was again great, but there was a buggy tank that had no textures just tracks. havent tried Guinea (Pig:uhoh:)bay yet. Neither Lebanon or Saaremaa. But where is he?

jumjum August 16th, 2007 05:43 PM

Well they are beta. And even though the only one I can use (in SP) is Desert Blitz, it is a real treat because of the rolling hills/dunes and hidden pools, and the million places that a small column of enemy infantry can hide until all of a sudden....

And mydjinny, those names works both ways - I keep on the lookout for yours as well. :)

Paasky August 20th, 2007 08:58 AM

Hi again, I took a hiatus from mapping for awhile.

The AI for Desert Blitz is really rudimentary. By that I mean I let bf generate it & never touched it again :P But the AI is still fairly capable at times, thanks to the utter simplicity of the map (almost only land).

Good news is that Flooded Valley has been accepted into the BFE-WaW tournament, and will thus be getting a full 64-player testrun in about a months time. I just finished creating the shadows for the map.

It will be a 'Hot' War campaign, Allies vs USSR in 1946.
World at War (WaW) Homepage - Simply the Best Forgotten Hope Tournament! (signups will open in about a month)

I made some 001's for the maps, fixing a few things here & there for Flooded Valley, Guinea Bay, Lebanon & Gembloux Gap.

Big A August 20th, 2007 12:01 PM

Are you in the process of making new map(s)? and maybe you should conract Real-badseeds future mappack.:D

Paasky August 21st, 2007 12:03 AM

Nope, no new maps. I've tried to learn some BF2 mapping, so I believe I'm ready for when FH2 finally comes out.

Paasky September 11th, 2007 01:38 PM

Grabbi, or anyone else for that matter: If anyone wants to use these maps, feel free to edit them as you please. Just prettyplease include the 'Orig map by Paasky' in any custom loadingscreens and/or readme's.

I think I'm done with ed42 mapping. Next on the menu: whacking BF2 editor until it bleeds and does something correctly.

Big A September 11th, 2007 01:39 PM

But do these maps go to the R-BS Mappack?

Paasky September 12th, 2007 01:27 PM

That all depends on R-BS. I'm sure he reads this page ;)

Meanwhile, I've done some fixing on the Flooded Valley map, including muddy brown water :D I'll make that map available soon, which will be my last bf-mapping experience. It's been fun :)

Big A September 12th, 2007 01:41 PM

does it have now sp?

Paasky September 15th, 2007 01:56 AM

No, no SP. I have no idea how to add bots, and playing against them is boring anyway.

Big A September 15th, 2007 04:58 AM

Is it? Ask someone to put AI to your map(s).

Paasky September 15th, 2007 07:37 AM

As I said: Everyone is free to use the maps as they wish. I won't be updating them anymore.

Sidenote: I jsut started making the two FH2 maps I've got planned, and I have to say, the terrain from Google Earth looks great :)

Re: Paasky's Mappack

Does someone still have the mappack installer file? The link is broken and I want to play this mappack so bad
