I don't know for mortar, but classical artillery can use several sorts of projectiles...

smoke shells, lighting shells with small parachutes,etc..

:eek: I've never actually thought a lot about this subject, always presumed explosive charges were used... actually I don't even know how those worked, heh.

As you'll see quite extensivly used.

In the German army, you had even the "Nebeltruppen" who's duty was specifically to cover ground attack via the use of smoke devices.
This was actually the original development of the NebelWerfer who could fire 3 types of projectiles : high-explosive shells, incendiary projectiles and smoke projectiles.
Still in our days it is extensively used :
