Default crash to desktop, the fix for me and I hope others

Quite a lot of people have the crash to desktop (CTD) bug. I have come to accept it, since there was no fix for me it seemed. Had the problem on two pc's. My current one (AMD3800+, 2gb ram) and my previous one (AMD 2500+, 1.5gb ram). Both of which more then able to handle Forgotten Hope.

Anyway, a while back I posted this "new idea". The not touching you're mouse while the new map loads or the game starts. In my case this worked about 40% of the times I've tried.

Now for me it's not as much of a problem with my new rig, if I don't CTD, I'm usually the first ingame. If I however do tend to CTD, which normally results in me trying to start the game 4 or 5 times and CTD-ing I do get ingame quite early on. On the server Forgotten Soldiers for example, just in time for the first spawn due to the 60secs delay.

But I can imaging people with a lot less ram memory get frustrated.

*bah this is again starting to get quite long, let's this finish up kouji!*

I've now fixed my CTD bug. 100% of the times when a server loads the next map or I go ingame the game DOES NOT CTD! After trying lot's of things posted on forums about CTD, even in the sticky up top (which didn't work for me ) I've come across something which does work.

The fix:

When FH starts or loads a new map the cdrom starts spinning up, so I thought what if I create an image of the bf cdrom on my hard drive and load it into daemon tools on a virtual cdrom drive. And voila, no more CTD's

This only works if you have a legal version of bf1942 (cdkey), so don't get any ideas

I dont know if this is legal on this forum..you seem to have a legal cd key so Im going to suggest possibly looking for a no-cd patch.

This is 100% legal, since you need to own a legit bf1942 cdkey to be able to go online. I just made an iso image of my legally store bought cdrom cause it's damaged (nero burning rom didnt want to copy it to a fresh cd due to unreadable errors)

Also a no cd patch doesn't allow you to go online as your content will differ from the server (I tried that option also ). And all of the servers do this check (not the mod content but the BF1942.exe and mod.dll files). You can however download bf1942 from torrents and use those iso's. But this still doesn't change the fact that you need a legit cdkey to be able to go online. Nothing dodgy or illegal about it.

Ea is just silly forcing us to have the cdrom in the tray for the simple reason that they use crappy materials for their cdroms. And for example Steam Powered (Half-Life 2 and others...) has shown a more effective way to counter piracy, accounts with stored information on what games you own. Theres no need for cdroms in the tray with their method.

I already had one set of bf1942 cdroms torn apart due to it always being in the cdtray during gaming. So as a matter of fact I own two legit cdkeys. Also loads of people I know had this very same problem. My current cd is also scratched/damaged, making it apparently unreadable at times and probably weeks/days from breaking apart. This would also explain the increasing amount of CTD's I encounter. The possible read errors during start or mapchange are most likely the culprit for the CTD...

I do that too!
I created an image, but unfortunately it works just one time with Daemon Tool 4.0. I can only load one map, after that I have to remount the image.
It worked fine with Daemon 3.7, but I don't want to downgrade because I experienced major problems with driver conflicts in the past. So I just use my good old original cd again.

ACK! must have been a different nocd thingy then anyways, you still need a legit cdkey for online play even with a nocd exe. I'm just happy I don't CTD anymore :P

yeah. Curiously, the Daemon Tools developers claim it does work with BF1942...

I tried everything I could think of with 4.x until I got so annoyed that I went
back to 3.x. Works as well as ever (but then, I haven't played any other
games than BF since I downgraded, so there could well be problems I just
haven't discovered yet).

Just as a note; you can find mini-ISOs on the net if you have trouble making
a proper ISO or if you want to save some HD space (the mini-ISO I've been
using for the past two and a half years is 20mb., but I've seen 4-5mb. ones
too). They work as well with Daemon Tools (3.47, not 4.0.3) as full ISOs (or,
mine does, anyway. Haven't tried others).

Maybe try one of the smaller ones. They're fairly common, so I assume
they work (they are usually in Alcohol 120% format, so they appear as
two .mdf/.mds files rather than one .iso file).

I got the 20mb. image from an eastern European site nearly three years ago
and the site is either dead or I can't come up with the search strings which
I found it with back then. That's the only place I've ever seen it on the web.

I did make a torrent last year and uploaded over 10GBs of the 20mb.
ISO, but none of all those copies seem to have made it to any public sites
The torrent isn't active anymore because the HD the files were on died,
but you can still find torrent sites which list it and if you're very lucky,
someone may still be seeding it.
oh, and if you do look for it, the size of the torrent shows as around 10mb.
because I packed the mini-ISO with UHA and made it self-extracting (so it
also shows as an exe).
