Graphics problem

For some strange reason, this game keeps resetting it's settings to very low. It looks worse than Counter-Strike 1.6. Why? My comp is a very strong one.

2 Gb RAM
GeForce 7800 GT
AMD Athlon 64 4000+
250 Gb Memory

I really want to play this game on it's full potential. Someone plz help.

Did you patch up to 1.33? New drivers for all hardware components?
