New Alienware computer, bad framerate... WTF!?

Please help if you have a solution. This is very frustrating, I have a new alienware computer that i know can handle this game very well but I get a horrid fps. Actually, at first the game will run fine for about 5 minutes then hell breaks loose. The game is patched, I have the latest nvidia drivers, whats the problem?

Could you please tell us your computer specs? CPU (company and frequency) , RAM amount , graphic card (company , generation and VRAM amount) , OS (XP or Vista) and DirectX info (version , any problem reports , etc.).

Vista , huh? Do you have SP 1 installed? Try reinstalling graphic drivers. Sometimes it helps to use some older version. Run DirectX Diagnostic Tools and see if it gives any problem reports. Also , your BIOS may need updating despite the fact it`s a new computer.

You can also try this:

- Go into your "FEAR" folder
- Right click on "FEAR.exe" and click "Properties"
- Go to "Compatibilty" tab
- Set compatibility mode with Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
- Checkmark "Disable Visual Themes" and "Disable Desktop Composition"
- Under Priviledge Level checkmark "Run this program as an administrator"

Do the same thing for the other game. I don`t know if any of this will help , but it can`t hurt. Try it and let me know what happened.

i've heard many bad stories about alienware hope you fixed the problem but it surely can't be the windows vista because it automaticly updates it slef anyway with the latest updates might be a hardware problem try contact alienware customer service support.

Sorry m8. But that is ignorance at it's finest. It can't be vista cause it updates?
How many service packs were there for Xp ?
How many hot fixes ?
Updates?
not to mention the fact that, this isn't the first time this is happening.
Nobody seems to understand the fact that, you are going to have issues playing older games on newer os's. No matter what Micro$haft has done to make it " bigger better and shinier".

Have you just assigned 1 core to run the game ?
And do you have any other apps running in the background?

GeForce 8 series are known for having issues with older games. My friend has GeForce 8 graphic card and his Republic Commando won`t work unless "Bump - Mapping is set to "Low". Maybe F.E.A.R. has the same or simmilar problem. I suggest you to disable all graphic features (shadows , shaders , etc.) and see what happens. If the problem dissapears , turn them back on one at a time and observe how the game behaves each time.

I've already tried. The game runs perfectly for a few minutes then the framerate drops.

Sounds like you have a overheating/cooling issue.

Nah its not that, once fear starts getting a bad framerate, i'll quit the game then instantly restart it and it'll be fine for the next few minutes again

Sounds to me that you are another Vista victim. Vista and old(er) games just don`t like each other. Maybe you should "upgrade" to XP? :clueless:

What do you think a heating cooling issue is ?

You run something, the system heats up beyond the cooling measures. You shut down, it cools down enough to start back up. You start back up it takes a few min to heat up again.

Hence the reason why it sounds like a heat/cool issue.
