My Fileplanet FEAR contest video 2nd prize winner!

These are the music added and original versions of Another Day At The Office, an mp video I made for the Fileplanet FEAR map, movie & mod contest. The new music added version is sort of a celebration video for having won a 2nd prize category FEAR souvenier pack which is comprised of a FEAR jacket, T shirt, and autographed copy of the game.

Another Day At The Office is 23 minutes of non stop mp action designed to show the intensity of actually being in a FEAR DM (there is some TDM shown too). Although the original version captures the realism of FEAR mp more true to life, being able to hear the enemy better, the music version is great from a movie viewer's standpoint.

Despite my being rusty at online play and being new to FEAR mp, I managed to get in some killing sprees and match wins. There are nine songs included in the music version, all by the band Dope, who's explicit language, wild antics, and combative lyrics lend well to the chaotic intensity that is FEAR DM.

I decided to take up this project only one week before the deadline for contest submissions. From the 17+Gigs of capture, I had 640 clips, which I took the best 263 of and trimmed them down to their best action moments, barely meeting the 250MB filesize restriction.

(Note: The music version is also larger in viewing size being 640x480, rather than 512x384, and a bit sharper in image quality due to a slightly higher bit rate proprtionally. Thus the large file size, but IMHO it's worth every MB to download.)

The songs in order of appearance are:

Take Your Best Shot
Debonaire
Sick
Motivation
Stop
Pig Society
Die MF Die
Bring It On
March Of Hope

Here is a site showing the entire winners list which has a link to download the other movies. http://www.fearfans.com/newsitems/84/

They ended up not ranking the winners 1st-3rd, and 4th-6th for each prize category, so it's like a 3 way tie for 1st and 2nd prizes. 1st place prizes are a 7000 series Nvidia based video card.

Fileplanet free accounts often require you to wait in a queue to download, but I found the download speed to be fairly fast once it started. There are some pretty creative entries, especially the top 3.

I feel I did well just to win anything, as some of the contestants have professional video editing software and skills, not to mention good programming skills as well (The Passenger). Hope you enjoy the show.;)

Thanks Jonathan, and I appreciate the quick edit job saving me from that embarrasing double post.

You know though, at first I felt lucky to win anything, having crammed the project into a one week rush job, and having been up against pro level editing software and skills. Then I watched the 3 videos that won the top prize, and quite frankly was dissapointed that none of them represented FEAR mp well or much in the way of skilled hardcore gaming.

They seemed to cater to visual effects, SLowMo, and short length-high bit rate entries. Two of the top three selected were rather similar in that they used the same music in the same way, speeding up the video during the fast techno parts, and assembling cutscenes from the game. Both of them also took up much time just rolling credits and showing non gameplay related stuff.

It is said by many that the mp is the main selling point of FEAR, yet none of the judges appeared to honor that in the top prize category. Perhaps I listened to the hype about patch 1.03 too much before decideing what content to include. None the less I'm glad I chose the content I did because otherwise I'd not have discovered what a rush FEAR mp is.

Anyway, if you get the time, use the link above and check out all the winner's movies and judge them for yourself.;)

I would if I could, but I am on ubuntu linux until I get my windows installation back up. Ubuntu doesn't come with any codecs, and I can't install them either.

Hmmm, sounds like serious PC problems. I've formatted several times and know what it's like to have to get up and running again, but I know how to deal with problems better now. It's more like a challenge I take on to get things fixed rather than format, but I must admit, it doesn't happen as often anymore.

I tried to find a service I could upload my Another Day At The Offfice music version movie to FEARfiles.com, but even YouSendIt is restricting to 100MB files now for free accounts.

I read at the end of the FEARfiles.com file submission page that you can upload them to FF where they can be retrieved. I've uploaded files to FF before, but just to get them on their main database rather than a specific game site of their's.

I have packaged it in zip format with a .txt description file and six 640x480 screenshots. The movie itself is still in two parts because I use Movie Maker, and it won't do project that big in one file unless I make it small in viewing size. The size of the zip is 401MB!

I'm not sure how I can convey that I want it to go on the FEARfiles.com site though. Should I just send an email to team@feargamefiles.com and ask them to pick it up off FF's main database once it gets there and put it on FEARfiles.com?

Yeah, just submit it there, and give us the link to the FileFront.com download.. we'll take care of it.

I personally will get it uploaded :)

17 GB of capture!! flippin heck....and a week before the deadline.Well done on doing some serious recording / editing and getting 2nd prize.

And those top 3 vids i imagine are not as good as yours ;)

Re: My Fileplanet FEAR contest video 2nd prize winner!

Jonathan, OK, like I said, I already uploaded it to my filepage, but haven't submitted it to their database yet, I was waiting to see what you'd say.

(EDITED)
Just submitted it to FF's database via .zip format. I'll notify you guys at team@feargamefiles.com as soon as I get approval verification.;)

PC Gamer, yeah, it was a King Kong size load to accumulate:uhoh:, even WITH Game Cam and it's use of Mpeg4. I did learn how to sync the audio much quicker via Virtual Dub though. It's amazing how much you can force yourself to improve at something when you're faced with a big project and a looming deadline.

Thanks for the kudos, but I can't lay sole claim to second prize, it's shared 3 ways. I guess they might have decided last minute some would be upset if they were given the same prize for having been ranked higher than two other winners, they lumped us into two 3-way tie groups, they only had two types of prizes.

To be honest, the top 3 are nice to watch high bit rate stuff, but they're short and mostly filled with effects fluff, with lots of cutscenes, titles and credits. None of them had much in the way of gaming action.

Still, I'm glad I chose to make mine the way I did, with lots of hard core gaming action in it. I'd much rather see a few serious gamers enjoy it than worry about the comments of those that are looking for film quality sharpness and Hollywood-like effects (no SlowMo in mine at all). Don't get me wrong, I'm a sucker for effects when I watch a movie (King Kong is AWESOME!) A video game is an interactive thing though, I don't even like cutscenes much when I'm playing a game, let alone while watching a movie of it.

In all fairness though, it is my hope that any of you whom are interested take the time to view all the 6 winning entries and judge them for yourself. Though our entries vary in finished result, they all share the commonality of being exhaustive projects made not just for the sake of winning a prize, but in honoring this fine game and our fellow players with a little entertainment.;)

Cool, that was fast, thanks Jon, I was hoping the included screenshots would be posted too, but perhaps there was some trouble with them?

Also, I checked the US mirror for the Part II segment and it takes you to an error 404 page indicating file not found. Part I has been downloaded 9 times, and Part II has not been downloaded at all.

Great, I haven't seen any comments on either Part yet, but I'm sure some are wondering what's up with Part II.

Thanks again Jon, this happened much quicker than I thought it would, I was assuming it would be until Tuesday at the soonest.:)

Nah, I've just been ultra busy lately (read the news post on FearGameFiles.com)

The link seems to be working now.. must've taken awhile to update.

As for the photos, I'm about ready to retire for the night, but I'll add em tomorrow.

Wow, robotics are way cool, and so good to get into if you have the skills, very good job outlook there. I looked at the pics on your team site, but couldn't watch the vids, as I don't have Quicktime. I may download them and convert with Stoik though. Good luck at the Atlanta championships.

Yes the link works OK now, I hope those that watched part one will check out Part II as well.

Hope you get your PC up and running soon, sounds like you need it with all that work you do.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll look for the screens next time I check the site, but I'm sure for now you need the sleep.;)

BTW, thanks for the mention on file of the week!:)

I wrote that media section 98% by myself. I however am not incharge of maintaining that section, the media subteam is. I told them to make the files in DivX encoding.. do they listen to me? nooooo.

I wish I could go. Only a select people (18 out of 45ish) peopel are chosen to go. I was chosen, but I couldn't afford the $450 to go. But thanks. This entire season we've only lost 8 matches (out of many)

Yup, it's still possible to do work, just very difficult. All I need is a WinXP Pro disc, and I'm set. I don't even need a key.. just the disc.

Fair enough, I realize now after watching the video again I took 5 shots from Part I and only 1 from Part II. I did carefully examine the whole movie for good shots, but there were some good frag segments in Part II that screenshots just wouldn't do justice to.

What branch, Army I take it? So you're the guy that swipes the grenades so we can't use them in mp?LOL:D

Personally, I would have chosen WMV, as most everyone has PC and XP with Media Player. Then MP can play it without adding extra codecs, which can and have on my system messed with MP, that's why I don't install Quicktime anymore. Divx doesn't seem to harm it, but the quality isn't as good as WMV.

They're leaving themselves open for a bomb attack! Seriously though, it must be tough to not afford to go.

Thanks PC, yes, FEAR mp IS pure carnage if you get on busy servers like "let's kill".

My only regret is that I lost a whole days worth of good capture due to no audio being recorded. It's a bug in Game Cam requiring turning on audio record EACH time the game is launched, and I forgot that one time and payed for it.

I was in a zone that day and won some close matches, but in retrospect, they may not have looked as intense as what's in the video.

Thanks, I guess I do OK at it considering I don't put much practice into it, but keep in mind video editing can make anyone look real good. It just isn't fun to watch someone's deaths though.

The days worth of video I lost had a lot of 3rd out of 10 scenarios, and like I said, some good match wins that were close battles. It's seems common for there to be one or two guys that score quite a bit higher than the others do, and usually it's not me.

That day I was getting good at holstering my weapon and moving quickly to avoid fire and setup in a different location, often catching them off guard. This is particularly an effective technique in Deadwood, but ironically it also lost me a match in it where I did more holstered running than need be, and lost my lead at the end because of it.

I came up on the guy that was in 2nd place by surprise, and it actually caught us both off guard. He seemed to have his weapon holstered too at the time from what I recall, but I was the one that panicked and hit melee by mistake instead of the weapon key. Being too far away for it to do any good he just drew and shot me in the last seconds, winning by one kill.

How embarrassing is THAT!
