Wierd Crash

Okay, yesterday my game suddenly started crashing when I loaded. Message said Oblivion has stopped working. I think it could have been that bug that kills your game so and so many hours after installing SI, but I installed a patch made to fix that. I hadn't installed any mods for a long time and it worked fine 10 minutes earlier. I restarted the comp and got the same problem. That's when I tried to reinstall the game. when the loader got 30% done I got this:

An error - lots of strange numbers - has occured while running the setup.
Please make sure you have finished any previous setup and closed other applications. Contact your vendor Bethesda Softworks.
Details:
Error Code: -5006 : 0x8000ffff
Error Information:
>SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp (1194)
PAPP:Oblivion
PVENDOR:Bethesda Softworks (Bethesda Softworks)
PGUID:35CB6715-41F8-4F99-8881-6FC75BF054B0
$11.0.0.28844
@Windows (6000) IE 7.0.6000.16575

Id rather find another solution before I try and contact them, they propably dont know the solution anyway. Please help.

Just noticed the common problems thread, will try updating the drivers and such.

Check the disk, how scratched is it? Remember, since a DVD has more data on it, scratches(even small ones) do more damage than they would to Cd's.

I managed to reinstall by deleting all the files and registry keys connected with the game. But yeah the CD is quite scratched by now, been using it for a long time.

Then it's most likely the disk. Try cleaning it with a 100% cotton cloth or a Microfiber wipe.

Make sure to wipe from the center to the outside edges. If you use water, make sure to remove it all after cleaning, use purified water if you can, or the Calcium or other chemicals might leave marks if you leave the water on the disk to dry.

Also, don't hold the disk in a way that you can break it into two peices, hold the outside edges(Like you should do with every disk) and brace the center of the disk with one of your middle fingers.

If it still doesn't work, try cleaning it more... if it still doesn't, you may have to get a new disk.

You might want to invest in a case for the disk, too.
