| I just got a new xps 1710 computer with vista. I tried to install oblivion but about 1/3 on the way the installation stops and I get this message: Feature: Oblivion Component: Oblivion File: E:\data3.cab Error: Data error (cyclic redundancy check). Do anyone know what this means? ![]() I still got it installed on my old pc but I dont think thats the reason and the pc is definatley not too old. Please respond if you know the problem. |

| Could be that your disc is messed up. Why don’t you try copying all the information onto your hard drive then installing the game from there? If Vista gives you sh_t then copy the files from and XP machine unto a portable hard drive or USB key, then transfer it over to the Vista PC and try the installation again. It’s a cumbersome workaround, but it should work, and if you have a new pc it should go relatively fast. |

| Generally a cyclic redundancy check means that there is some kind of problem with either the media itself or the disc drive that is preventing the data from being read properly. It's usually something very simple such as strategically placed bits of dust in the drive, or a splodge of ketchup on the disc. If you have used the disc before you can rule out the possibility of the data being incorrectly written to the disc in the first place. At any rate, there are a few things you can do to try and get around it. First of all, check the disc itself to make sure there are no scratches or marks, obviously. If there are scratches, and they are not major cracks or anything, they can be repaired fairly easily - just do a search on Google or check your local computer store for disc repair kits. And if there is dirt, clean the disc in the normal way. Assuming the disc is in good order, if you have a second disc drive try installing the game from there. If nothing else this will help to determine if there is a fault with the disc itself or just the drive - if you don't have another drive on your computer, try temporarily swapping it out for one from another computer. And if you're lucky, it may work first try. If it doesn't work, try cleaning the drive with a CD ROM cleaner and see if that works.
