Films in 3D
 

I just went to see the new Avengers film in 3D, and for the most part, the 3D was great. It added depth and a certain sense of realism that draws you in to the film more. However, certain action scenes with heavy CG effects get ruined by it; lots of detail is lost by making it 3D because the majority of the screen ends up blurred. I wish I had saved money and watched it in old fashioned 2D. Oh wait, that's not possible because it's only shown in 3D :uhm:

I'm not aiming to bash 3D as a whole here. For comparison, when I watched Up! at the cinema in 3D, I loved it. When I watched it again (damn females), but in 2D, I felt picture quality had been lost. This is only my opinion, but I feel like, because Up! was fully animated and made with 3D in mind, it was improved by 3D. Whereas Avengers and other real with CGI films can end up ruined in a visual sense because of it.

Also, would you believe that I enjoyed Avatar that much more the second time I watched it, purely because it was on TV, at home, without those damn glasses?

Thoughts on whether 3D adds to or subtracts from films?

In my opinion, 3D is just a gimmick for more money. The only film I have ever seen in 3D that was worth the price, and actually added to the film, was Tron: Legacy. Fantastic. Even without the 3D that movie is fantastic.

Clash of the Titans in 3D? That was a joke. Also, I find it odd that you couldn't see it in 2D. Theaters around where I live always have the option of 2D or 3D.

I find it almost impossible to watch anything in 3d. Because of the illusion of depth, I can't help trying to focus on things in the background - as I would if I was actually there. And they remain stubbornly out of focus. It gives me the most incredible headaches.

If the movie is developed from the ground up to be in 3D it can be quite a nice experience (like Avatar).

I can't remember all of the films that I have seen in 3D, though the ones I remember having watched are (in order):

• Avatar
• Clash of the Titans
• Thor
• Piranha 3D
• Tron: Legacy
• Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
• Transformers: Dark of the Moon
• Immortals
• Underworld: Awakening

Like said, there are probably more but I don't really remember them all too well. Suffice to say, Avatar was the first 3D film I ever watched, and sure enough, it lived up to the hype. Critics aside; I loved the film, the concept, and the work that went into it. Avatar was made to be a 3D film, and was brilliant in being just that. It ain't quite the same watching it again in 2D.

With the exception of Tron: Legacy and Piranha 3D (which wasn't that great a film in itself) the 3D generally didn't work. Most of these other films had been converted to 3D after filming; and it showed.

If you're going to make a film in 3D, then it'll work. If you're going to add in the 3D later, the film will most likely fail.

Indeed! I honestly cannot remember which movies I've seen in 3D, because not even 1/10th of them were made with 3D from the ground up.

Small tangent: I like how people bash Avatar for having an almost identical storyline to Pocahontas. These people fail to realise that the movie Pocahontas was based on something that actually happened. So in a way, Avatar is more original than Pocahontas because of the planet it takes place on and the immense amount of lore on that planet.

It sort of seems to me that the majority of people are very displeased when something becomes successful and critically acclaimed. Look at Twilight, I don't actually know why so many people hate it. I don't like it because I'm not a fan of the story, but I don't hate it, I just don't know why so many people do.

Ok that was a larger tangent than I expected. =p

People dislike it because it is successful. I won't blatantly lie and say that it is critically acclaimed, because it isn't. I liked the Twilight books and the movies--the ones I've seen, anyways--and while I personally do like them I can definitely see many reasons why people dislike them. When you sit down and think about it, some things don't make sense. Edward is essentially dead, yet he can impregnate a human? Dafuq is that about? And Bella's choices essentially boil down to, "Do I have sex with the corpse, or the mutt?"

But anyways... =p

I'm blind in my left eye so can't enjoy 3D movies :(
