Stargate Universe

No, not a thread on the whole universe, but rather a thread on the upcoming series.

Article: GateWorld Stargate Universe U.K. premiere is October 6
Wikia Entry: Stargate Universe - Stargate Wiki - Universe, Atlantis, SG-1 (Possibly spoilerific)

Thoughts? Personally, my opinion is rather blank.
Judging from the trailers, it'll be darker than Atlantis, but more centered on the team than SG-1. I'm actually glad they're continuing with the series format, instead of sticking to the movie road.
It's airing on October 2nd in the US, and on October 6th in the UK. The rest of Europe probably wont see a trace of it until sometime next year.

Re: Stargate Universe

i've never been interested in stargate in general until now. however, it looks like this series is going to be dark which interests me. i may take a look at this series to see if its good.

it also looks like stargate is taking the star trek voyager approach with this series. hopefully they make this one darker then voyager was. i always felt voyager was lacking something.

Re: Stargate Universe

It looks almost like a cross between Battlestar Galactica and SG1/SGA. Should be interesting to see how it plays out on TV.

Re: Stargate Universe

I would have personally liked them to conclude Atlantis with another five seasons (bringing the season count to ten like they did with SG-1) before they went on with SGU. SGA still has a lot to cover, with the Asgard, Wraith, Geni, and all those other races that 'Replicator Wier' mentioned she had seen. We've heard nothing of them, almost makes you wonder, doesn't it?

SGU should be good (it is Stargate), and I like that they're going dark about it. I just hope they don't screw it up at all. For this show to work, they really need to have no gate connection with Earth. The minute that becomes a reality, everything will pretty much be over, as they'll be able to return home.

I'm also curious as to this ship... Its been going for a fair while, it hasn't degraded, and no alien species has tried to blow it apart yet? I doubt very much that it is invincible. In regards to the show, for the moment, I keep an open mind.

Re: Stargate Universe

I have seen just about every Stargate episode ever made... I cant wait for SGU. I do have to say that the CG has got to be better than SGA season 5. It was starting to look like an old video game. I also think that SGA was getting a bit cheesy and predictable. I agree that they had alot that they could have developed on but what they did do would have been much better.

Flash525 September 26th, 2009 02:22 AM

Re: Stargate Universe

The final of SGA was complete shite in my opinion. It was rushed to hell, and was poorly directed. An uber Hive that was destroyed when Atlantis (or rather McKay) conveniently worked out how to use wormhole technology. Yeah...

Zipacna September 26th, 2009 03:10 AM

Re: Stargate Universe

Be honest, the longer a series runs, the more repetitive it becomes...
SG-1 season 1+2 are still the best. I mean how often did we see parallel universes, time travel and body-switching up until now? ;)

Flash525 September 26th, 2009 05:40 AM

Re: Stargate Universe

To be honest, SG-1 started to go downhill when they brought Ascension and Anubis back into it. The Goa'uld were the perfect enemy, and they killed them off too soon, and then came the Ori. Sorry, but what a pathetic excuse for an enemy they were. They could have easily stuck with the Goa'uld as the main enemy for a solid ten seasons, and then ended it with the Death of Ba'al (Continuum).

In addition, they could have covered other Goa'uld that were mentioned, but not seen throughout the show.

Serio September 26th, 2009 05:59 AM

Re: Stargate Universe

Most of the Goa'uld felt the same (Apophis, Heru'ur, etc) but it would have been nice if they had continued with Ba'al. The least they could have had was more Tok'ra - Goa'uld conflicts(like the one in Summit).
I do agree that Seasons 9 and 10 weren't nearly as good as some of the previous seasons, but it did have some rather good episodes such as Collateral Damage, Ripple Effect, and Unending.

Stratopwn3r September 27th, 2009 01:09 PM

Re: Stargate Universe

I like SG-1 ALOT more than Atlanits. The Characters in Atlantis were just different versions, which made that original at all. And Teal'c is my GOD! I liked Ba'al as an enemy, he was just so happy, and nice in an evil way. Continium was great because of that.

Re: Stargate Universe

Okay, I gotta admit I really like McKay and Ronon.
But the rest is really not that good... Actually, Stargate started to go down when they overdid the entire Ancient-thing.
Even now they're the "great Ancients", despite of their mistakes, they're still the smartest guys that ever lived. I hate the Ancients.
Would have liked to learn more about the Furlings and the Nox, especially the ones in the big flying city. :nodding:

It was the Nox that lived in that big flying city. I agree that it would have been nice to find out a little more about them, but then, that wouldn't have left much to the imagination.

We know that the four great races are the Ancients, Asgard, Furlings and Nox. The Anciets were pretty much explained to death, as were the Asgard. We found out a little about the Nox, but they were left mysterious. It has been stated by the show producers that they haven't any plans to ever show us the Furlings. In one way, I like this, as it allows us to speculate. :)

Urm, :Puzzled:

Its the 3rd show. We do not count that animated 'thing' that Fox put together. To do so would be considered blasphemy.

Most likely the majority of the other Brits who want to see SGU will catch it on YouTube sooner or later before October 6th. I'm going the legal route and waiting for the premiere on Sky One HD, then iTunes if I happen to miss it for some reason.

Yeah me too. (to both things) Like i said before though, it had better have much nicer CG than SGA did in S5.

Re: Stargate Universe

Aye there's a lot more money going into SGU than there was for SG-1 and Atlantis meaning much better effects and CG. Like the exploding planet at the end of the comic con trailer is just sexy.

Re: Stargate Universe

I probably went in with to high expectations and so I was a little disappointed. It was good though, little slow paced but it looks like it will be getting right into it in part 3.

Spoiler:
I hope that flashbacks arnt a regular thing and were only used in the pilot to show the events that lead them to being on board the Destiny. I may be willing to put up with them again for the character backgrounds but no more than that.

I know that SGU is going to be more character based but I wouldn't mind if the action was increased a bit.

Darker can be good, BSG proved that but SGU has a lot of work to do to prove that it can make it work. I will admit that at the start of BSG I wasn't really into but it eventually lead to being one of the best sci-fi series I have ever watched. I hope that SGU can do the same for me.

I will hold off judgement until I see more episodes, there going off world in the next one and im interested to see how well they do with that.

It's meant to have less Sci Fi and more Drama as they attempt to survive in a galaxy a LONG way from home.

Re: Stargate Universe

I actually enjoyed the first two episodes. Unlike SG-1 and Atlantis (where they're pretty much peaceful explorers) this show is going to be merely about survival. My only hope here, is that they don't have humanoid-looking aliens pop up here and there. The explanation for them in SG-1 and Atlantis was convenient, but there is no reason for them to be anywhere else out here.

Re: Stargate Universe

We can expect the aliens from the episodes of atlantis were the prometheus kept jumping from one universe to another.
It would be very odd for them to waste so much possible CGI content (models textures, makeup for the aliens etc)

Otherwise I'm not sure what to think about universe yet.
It's definitely strongly implied that it's darker - I don't think there was an explicit sex scene on SG before, plus the early deaths.

The characters at the same time just don't seem to be a mystery.

I'd say for instance, that it's a given that Rush leaked the info, that he also withhold the information knowingly and that he knows a lot more than he's telling. And is going to be the good bad guy who does stuff mainly for his own agenda instead of anyone elses while claiming to be a nice guy

Also the amount of cheese they produced with the videogame problem hurts my brain.

Saw the Pilot.

Interested, but not hooked in just yet. I got distracted from the show a bit when it was on, really didn't like the jumpy flashbacks and the anticlimactic ending for the two-hour pilot was not making me really want to watch another episode, but I'll give it a few more episodes to determine if it is worth my time after that.

I think you are wrong on the first point. Read up on the later stages of season 1, you'll find out why. ;)

I do agree with the rest though (even though he wouldn't have been the one to leak the location). He is going to be a good and bad guy throughout the show though, however I believe he has a single agenda, that being, to find a way to bring back his wife.

Thats good and all, but I thought episode three was quite poor compared to the first two. Wasn't really much to it other that a few people making some stupid decisions, and a little fight in the desert.

Surely it would depend upon how you look at that? Many people died in the base attack too.. though you're probably right with the select three.

So far its not bad, but its not SG either. It takes a little getting used to. I can't wait till this season gets released on BR. I have all of the SG1 seasons and about half of SGA on dvd.

That would be Second Lieutenant Vanessa James (played by Julia Benson, formerly Julia Anderson before Marriage).

She's the same lass who was in the sex scene with Matthew Scott in the first episode (although this scene was cut from British TV).

I'd agree. It isn't Stargate as we know it.

SG-1 was pretty much all about gate travel, it was only after Atlantis started that we went into (and onto) the more 'space ship' scene, on SG-1. Obviously they've decided to stick with that on Universe, and the show (like said before) isn't so much about exploration, as it is about staying alive.

Re: Stargate Universe

Wow, just checked out scenes from Masters of Horror with her in it. Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

It was a decent scene, and will add to later plot lines I believe. I just worry they are trying too hard to copy the emotional mechanic of BSG, that made it so popular. They are tapping into tension too early. BSG did not tap some of that until 6 episodes or more later. I am worried it will burn out too soon, or it will skip around to make filler shows from week to week, and make me loose interest. BSG did that around season 3, and it lost a lot of viewers.
