Default GeForce 3/ 1.7 GHz P4: worth it?

Dude, those cards cost $500! Would it just be better to buy an x-box (which some say has even more graphic muscle)? I've got an HDTV, so either way I might end up using GeForce technology on my tv. Is there any compelling reason to pay $500 other than being the cool kid on the block?

I'm looking to buy a new PC (and I'm sorta itching to do so soon and start doing my own software projects...had Visual Studio for a year or two, but never tried to master it). Should I wait for the market to bottom out or just take the plunge?

Also, what's about the best bang for the buck out of the current CPU's out there? I suspect 1.7Ghz P4 is past the point of diminishing returns...

and I'm leaning toward Windows 2k, since I trust the NT kernel a bit more than that Me crap. Right choice?

Right now, it's probably a lot of overkill; but over the next 8-12 months, there will be software coming out that you'll really WANT a system like this, if you want things to run smoothly. I will probably be waiting another 6-8 months before I even start thinking about an upgrade...if I do anything, it'll just be a GeForce 3 to replace my Voodoo 5, but that's not in the near future, either.

However, if your current PC is just beyond help and you've gotta have better speed with the current games, I always advise people to buy the fastest stuff they can get at the time...you don't want your system being totally outclassed in under a year. With the rig you've mentioned, you'll be ready for all the stuff they showed at E3 that's coming out later this year. Most of which isn't coming to XBox, so you'd be missing out on all these sweet-looking new PC games if you just decided to go XBox-only.

I was at the local Fry's Electronics, and I saw only 1 Geforce 3 there. There were like rows and rows of Geforce 2s. I thought that was sort of odd. Anyways, they were, I think, $400 there, so I didn't buy one. I plan to in a couple months, or when the price drops, whichever comes first (preferably price drop). My TNT 2 is just choking on Tribes 2 at times :P
