I read it two times. Once for school and a few years later when I knew a bit more about the Soviet Union. It's a very interesting book and you can really see a lot of the things happening today which Orwell describes. It is somehow unsettling that all which is needed for a totalitarian dictatorship seems to be present in one form or another in today's societies.

I read it last year, I think, and it will always have some relevance in real life. Everybody with any interest in politics/sociology should read it, and think about the issues it presents.

Spoiler:
Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father.

I liked it too, a fascinating read, and way ahead of it's time (1948)

Raises a lot of issues about totalitarianism, and is basically a big dig at it (rightfully so). People will always use it to compare with things like public monitoring etc, because the ideas which were so far fetched at the time, are becoming more & more similar to day-to-day life.

I heard the film was a pile of bollocks though.

I don't know a film of that name but there is the movie "Brazil" which was based mostly on 1984 and it's great.

edit: I just found an interesting site about Orwell applied to US politics:
