I was approached by the rep from the Dark Brotherhood even though I have only killed the people I was supposed too. Now I have to decide to kill the person he told me too or not. My question is, will that make me an evil character and mess up my fighters guild rank and other guilds? Also what are the advantages of joining the Dark Brotherhood? Thanks for any advice.
Re: Question about the Dark brotherhood. (spoiler?)
Its a good question...I killed someone in broad daylight right on the street, so I got a bounty for 1040, but no one saw except some "unseen force", the guards knew of course, but no one else did. I was able interact with the people who where in the inn across the street. he was the only guy on the street at the time too.
It does increase your infamy rating but it killing some one dosen't effect how people act around you unless they see you do it. It least thats what I think, I mean certainly didn't affect me much.
Oh yeah, the first person you have to kill is rufio, a weak old man that sleeps 20 hours a day. all you have to do is go to his room at the inn of ill omen, close the door and kill him. nobody knows that "you" killed him except for lucian(sp?)(The rep for the dark brotherhood) you can sleep in the old man's bed and lucian or whatever will appear and welcome you to the family. Just kill the old man...he's weak you can kill him in one hit! Hah. besides being evil is fun!

Lucien^.
But yeah, being evil is kewl ^_^ The Dark Brotherhood probably has the most innovative storyline for a guild in Oblivion, anyway (if you're a die-hard 'evil' gamer, you'll get pissed in the game sense; trust me o_o). Besides, 'Listener' is a cool-sounding rank xD

Mathieu Bellamont's diary is fun to read, too. <_<
Re: Question about the Dark brotherhood. (spoiler?)
I think its best if your thinking about joining the Dark Brotherhood, not to join any other factions, besides the arena, tell you know that the Dark Brotherhood quests don't interfere with any other guild quests.
Thats what happened to me a couple times in Morrowind, i'd join the theives and the fighters guild at the same time then I'd run into some problems that really pissed me off, and on another game I joined the mages guild as well as house Telvanni..well that was a big mistake. any way the whole thing turned out to be a pain in the ass.
But with that said I'm waiting tell I've finished the Dark Brotherhood quests before I join another faction, and know for certain that me being a dark brother, won't effect my options to join any other factions.

Nope. The developers spent quite some time to prevent such accidents: I'm the guildmaster of all five guilds, with both infamy and fame quite high - so I can tell, at least from some point, for sure. Generally, you can do -anything- you want - it's just your morale that stops you from performing some 'crazy' stuff. You'll just have to be careful with certain regulations when you join the guild... But that's not as annoying as it sounds.

Much more than most other guilds can offer - valuable artifacts and powers, per se.
Re: Question about the Dark brotherhood. (spoiler?)
Don't forget the cool horse you get when completing all the Dark Brotherhood quests. Shadowmare...or Shadowmere was it?
The horse can't die! yay! and its all black with red eyes...at least thats what i've seen in the screenshots.

Re: Question about the Dark brotherhood. (spoiler?)
Actually, I'd recomend completing the thieves guild campaign before even starting the dark brotherhood. It is so much fun to have a stealth and security rating of around 85 and be able to walk past a guard in broad daylight and have him not notice you.
