Lan setup

Hi Guys,

I'm new to all this but I need help to get my son's LAN working.

We have installed DoW on both pc's and both games are running (sharing same Disk 1 temp) but when we try to start up a LAN game there are no instructions so we don't know why we cant see the other pc.

Is this because we only have one version of the game (we wanted to test it first before buying a second game) or is there another reason?

Please help.

Thanks.

Hello,

Before I can attempt to help you I need some information first. Before playing games can the two computers see each other on the network? If they can't see each other via the network neighborhood then we have to start there. I have two copies of DOW and it works well on my network, however with just one copy there may a license number detection scheme at work that is causing your problem. For now just answer the first question and let me know what OS you are running on the two computers.

Hi Terry,

First, I really appreciate your help - thanks.

It's a new network just put in last Thursday so it could be me at fault. Its' a pc and a laptop both running XP and I can see floders (and folders;) ) on the other pc from either, access files, move stuff around etc. so it all seems to be working ok.

If I start DoW with Disk 1 in and then put it into the other pc I can get both going, playing shirmishes, single player etc but when I try to connect the 2 together either by LAN or Direct connection it doesn't see another player anywhere.

I have got ZoneAlarm Pro Firewall in place but this seems to work with evrything else ok.

Any ideas?

Hi Guys,

I'm dissapointed with you lot. I'm sure most of you know how to work a LAN and know what my problem is apart from being fed up of joining forums for help and then not getting any.

A tip to the moderators, can't unanswered threads be flagged in some way as looking around the forums a lot of questions are just being ignored and after a few days they are even less likely to get answered.

Don't we all owe it to our fellow members to make sure all questions and problems - where possible - get answered at least and resolved at best?

And if Terry East reads this wants the point of starting something you don't intend to finish, your wasting everybodies time and anybody else thinking of helping thinks - no need Terry is helping him, nice one.
I feel better for that, now is anyone going to help?

Hello again,

Sorry about the delay but I didn't get an email from the forum after your last post. Something not quit right with it or my setup. I posted a question also and now can't even find it.

About your problem, try turning Zone Alarm off. I used to use it but it caused so many problems that I finally gave up on it, and I even tried the "Pro" version. ZA is a great product but games need so many different ports open that it's very difficult to configure properly, but at least you know it's working!

So, disable ZA before you launch DOW on either machine and let me know what happens.

Again, sorry about not getting back to you sooner.

Terry

Tried this and no difference. When I go to the LAN screen in DoW it only shows our one user profile, open, closed and computer but no other user (Iwonder if we need two profiles as our only one is in use? - check this out). Does this setup work on your pc sharing one disk? Anybody else tried this?

Re: Lan setup

Just checked, we have two different user names so its not that. Can someone else with a LAN see if it will work with one CD or not. I am happy to go and buy another copy of the game if it will work with my LAN but don't want to buy another copy if the LAN is not going to work and THQ won't support problems with Laptops of any kind.

Hello again,
Still no email notification that you had posted, but I decided to check again. I believe your problem is with using one CD. Games and other programs now check the LAN to see if duplicate key is in use and if so won't function properly. I have two disks so its not a problem for me. With ZA off you should be able to connect and you have verified that you can see both machines on your network. That should be all you need. It would be nice if you had a friend with a copy of the game to try it with. All I can say at this point is that it does work on a LAN, my friend and I get trounced daily. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Thanks Terry, I'll bite the bullet and buy another copy for X-mas then I can get trounced daily as well. Thanks for your help and sorry for having a pop at you but I was getting pretty frustrafted with the whole thing and still think forums in general - and this one in particular - should get more input from the moderators. Have a very Merry Christmas.

I'll come back in a week or so and let you know if it works okay.

Good luck with the setup. No prob about the earlier statements. I've tried to get help before and it is frustrating to know that someone could help, if only they would. I'm still not getting notifications, guess I'll check my account for mis-spellings.

Re: Lan setup

Hi Terry,

I'm even more fed up now, I've just spent another 30 quid on a second copy and it still doesn't work.

A couple of times an opponents name briefly appeared on the list of games to join then just dissapeared by itself, the second time it disappeared when I clicked on it.

I've disabled all firewalls anti virus etc and still nothing.

Do you think this could vbe to do with permissions for the network connection?

Both computers are basically set up so they can access the my document folders of the other computer so do the DoW folders have to be added to a list somewhere?

Thanks.

Re: Lan setup

Yippee, I've got it working. Only one way with the Laptop as the server but working none the less. I've still got this to sort out as the Desktop is way faster so should be the server.

I think the problem has been with the combination of demos, the DoW game itself, patches, more patches etc. etc installed on both computers and maybe not always the same patches in the same order so I dleted everything off both computers, then installed the game, 1.01, 1.10 patches on both pcs in the same order and it actually works.

I hope this helps anyone else with the same problem but looking back I supose it is common sense but everything is easy once you've do it.

We have now downloaded a few of the new maps and these rock.. keep up the good work guys.
