| Slightly cooler than a n00b

When I play Doom 3 the textures become totally corrupted and have a checkered effect. There seems to be pixel errors too. I’ve installed directx9.0c and ati catalyst (4.9). I can boot up the menu screen on doom but when I play, it will crash and the checkered effect will appear everywhere on the screen making the game unplayable. But every once in a while the doom menu screen will corrupt too. There have been times where I could play in the game for a few seconds but then the screen would mess up. Any idea what to do?
I have: Dell Dimension 4400
Pentium 4 1.80 GHz
768 Ram
Radeon 9600 SE 256Mb DDR
