| In ROTJ the Emperor goaded Luke into killing him with. Was he really going to let him do it? A friend of mine suggested that Sidious new Vader would stop Luke from committing the act. The novel of the film implies that Vader didn't want Luke to kill the Emperor yet, fearing he would not turn fully to the dark side. Was Sidious for real about Luke striking him down? |

| I'm pretty sure he was just trying to get Luke to commit an act of aggression fueled by hatred and anger, elements of the dark side. He didn't need to let Luke kill him, the moment he tried he took a step down the dark side. So no, he wasn't serious, he liked living way too much.

| Actually, I think he didn't want Luke to kill him. A Jedi would sacrifice his life for a purpose. A Sith would do everything to stay alive. The Sith order consists of selfish dark Jedi, almost since its very beginning. No way the Emperor would have let Luke destroy him. Vader of course. Who is not strong enough shall die. Basic principle of the Sith.

| I'm pretty sure he knew Vader would deffend him, he was just goading and chastizing Luke until his anger took control of him.

| The over explained mystery we know nothing about..... Vader... Luke... The Emperor.... Star Killer... We may never know what the Emperor was thinking when he followed out his sith plot and took Vader as his student... But one thing is for sure, they Sith cant trust each other, the Student will always want the masters power, and the the Master will always want a better Student. One question is how far was Vader willing to go to take his Masters place? Or better yet how far was Vader willing to go to end his master and NOT take his place? The are alot of hiden plans and feelings about these characters we may never know, but I am sure that we may have the big picture, but the details are spotty at best...

But in my view i think it's pretty obvious he knew it would work out how he wanted it.How else do you manipulate people, without things like this it's just lying. You must give them a choice they want but know they won't do it and do something else therefore, hopefully, doing what you want them to do. He knew Vader would step in, he really wanted Luke to kill vader and take his place.

| He already had a plan. I don't see how he couldn't be serious. In the end, he was still resurrected later on, and managed to fight for a little while.
