It's kind of hard to imagine now, but maybe of George gave him a hood instead of a helmet to begin with, it wouldn't be so awkward to think about. But you're right, now that his helmet is pretty much his symbol, he looks kind of gay without it.

Hence, another problem with Anakin in the prequels........


As for his helmet, it was originally going to be just a helmet he used when travelling between ships, (in the vacuum of space) and removable afterward.

However, it just became part of the look and it was highly effective at conveying the fact that (when we see him for the first time in ANH) he's one of the most evil and powerful men in the galaxy.

Afterall, it was 1977.
Back then the exorcist was considered the scariest and most horrifying film ever made.
Like Nosferatu in its day.

Vader was always the coolest one for me, until I saw Revan.

Vader, because, first of all, we're talking about him before he got maimed by obi-1. He is the chosen one and he would have killed obi1 if he hadn't tried that jump. Then over the years he would just hone his talents until he was nearly invincible. But on the other hand, if he was in the "vader suit" then Revan would own him.
Then Jacen would own all of them, think about it. Luke is more powerful that the "chosen one", so leia is just as powerful, it's just that she didn't become trained by yoda. Then Leia marrys Han. and they have twins. From there Jacen comes. He fought the Yuhonvong and spent five years traveling the galaxy picking up on strange force secrets. Then He comes back and Luminaya trains him. so ya, Jacen would own.
