Well that's the funny thing, the High or Very High Shaders is what makes the game really look good. W/o them...

yea with the shaders on medium it looks pretty good. with them on very high its mindboggling.

No way man, I need to see a screenshot to believe that!
8600GTS? Epic Fail card compared to the other 88 series, and most of them can't do Crysis on Very High, including the Ultra, only reason Why my 8800GT can, is because of PCIe 2.0, and I guarentee, the 8600GTS/GT does NOT have PCIe 2.0

Graphics cards have yet to utilize PCIe 1.1 bandwidth on desktop systems let alone 2.0. The difference between the cards is memory bandwidth size from the GPU to the video memory, number of streaming processors and clockspeeds. The 8800GT has higher numbers in every regard.

I do find it difficult to believe that an 8600GTS was able to run crysis on very high as well. At least, not every setting on very high. If you turn off FSAA, lower the quality of water and particle effects you could 'possibly' have the other options turned to very high without a huge performance hit.

Not true, the grass seen in COH DX10 mode *Look closely, it looks like layers on layers of grass* can fully utalise the transfer mode of PCIe 1.1, How do I know?
I first saw grass like that in my mates game Barnadia, I'll find the old screenshot, but that lagged to hard because of the transfer rate, so we canned it.
Crysis does use the full bandwidth and then some aswell...
Also, the Ultra vs 8800GT, Ultra wins by miles, you should know that!
Just the 8800GT has PCIe 2.0 and higher memory clocks *Think its memory*

I dont think the PCI bus is the only thing that limits the throughput of data to a graphics card.

Also, the grass you are refering to was laggy cos it was rerendering pixels lots (overdrawing i think its called). This tests your fill rate, which "refers to the number of pixels a video card can render and write to video memory in a second", and your texture sampling speed, so tests more your memory speed

However, I recon having PCIe 2 would help with the latency of transfering data (?) (this is a random thought with no facts behind it)

yes.. im the one who thinks top range cards are fail
"i said the 8800GT was crap" (source)
"or even a crappy 9800GTX" (same source)
"I did, but then realised how shit 8800GT's were, they are just to slow to be of any use to most even intermediate gamers" (source)
"the 8800GT is to slow, it can bearly run any games" (same source)

I bet when you get your 9900GT, you will start complaining about how its so crap and cant even render cinema quality graphics at 1920×1080 in real time..

You're starting to sound like me.

Yeah the 9800gx2 was supposed to the the NEXT BIG THING but it's really not. Better slightly than GTXs in SLI if you put the GX2s in SLI [for quad-SLI], but then I think you're just spending money to spend money.

I was really relying on nvidia to come up with the NEXT BIG THING and now that they didn't, I'm pretty let down. God knows ATI won't bring anything spectacular anytime SOON.

So yes we can agree that some of the bigger production trailers that the Crytek guys did for Crysis are pre-rendered like the Jungle dx9 vs dx10, and if it's pre-rendered our systems will have trouble making it look that good with default .cfgs and only hoping for new drivers and game patches to fix all FPS problems [which is a forlone hope at best].

It took me about 6 months to come to terms with it, that Crysis is an unreasonably-demanding game and that is the main reason sales failed to break over 87,000 units [source is Maximum PC UK, march 2008] in the US. I also read in the same article that COD4 [though on the x360, but still an interesting figure] sold over 1.4 MILLION units. Nice contrast, lol.
