| You can scratch german out of there: he is saying ...unter aller kanone. But this topic made some red faces. You guys just can't agree with the fact that the word "sucks" wasn't/was used in those days (bad translation?) and yes, its hard to find a reasonable sized (English) dictionary (from 1944) with the word "sucks". But most agree with you that the word was never used. (maybe the game would be better if you putt the subtitles off?) I don't want to cause any red faces, but I always dislike when people are talking and they don't understand eachother. (my 2 cents) Last edited by EdhelrE; September 28th, 2006 at 08:15 AM.. |

| First of all Fredf...I said nothing to merit your immature and stupid outburst. I figured you would understand that within the context of the thread I was discussing the word sucks as a slang term. Boom goes the dynamite. Mal=1 Fredf=0 Also, thank you for referring to the generation that is trying to repair all the mistakes your generation made as the "slacker" generation. Mal=2 Fredf=0 Another thing, perhaps this generation despises and is annoyed with you because of how you bashed the world into peices and ignored your children to pursue your own whims. Then claim some sort of superiority because of when you lived....and you think WE want entitlements? Mal=3 Fredf=0 Lastly, and this is the big one. I have looked into the "sucks" issue. I have a college friend who worked on the "Oral history of WWII" project, in which he and many others interviewed WWII veterans on their experiences during and after the war. All nationalities were included, yes that means German as well. He looked into the transcripts and asked his professor who headed the project...a PhD in history which beats you by a long shot..... and they both agree that the terminology sucks WAS in use as a slang term by both Germans and English speakers in 1944. They base this on recollections from the soldiers and their descriptions of conversations they had amongst on another according to memory. Also, as the professor explained, the terminology "sucks" as a slang term picked up around the end of WWI (1918 for you fred). It started as an American saying referring to vacuum. Commonly being explained as it "sucks the life or joy" out of something. Eventually being widdled into just plain sucks. It never takes more then a decade for a word or slang term to translate or jump to other languages. The correct term would have been "Deine Kauffee saugen!" So it is concretely proven that sucks was in fact part of the German vocab as a slang term in 1944. Although not part of vernacular because slang is never considered part of vernacular to educated people. However, your generation decided to try to include it, good one gentlemen! Mal=4 Fredf=0 In conclusion, before you post do the research and stop slamming other people. When you do you prove what you do....which is sucking at life....(rather clever huh?) CASE CLOSED MAL=5 Fredf=0 COH FORUMS GAIN A VICTORY!!! |

| Unfortunately, you've still missed the boat completely, in the United States of America (and we are talking about American slang) the use of the words "sucks" in our context "this coffee sucks" is analgous to saying "this coffee sucks dick" not "this coffee sucks the life out of you". Do a little Internet research and you'll discover the truth about that Bozo! The current use of the term "sucks" in slang is a dysphemism for the act of fellatio. Please look that up if you don't know what it means. I don't give a rat's ass about your friends oral history research that has not bearing whatsoever on this particular usage. You're still wrong as rain and I'm still right so please put a sock in it until you can come up with something better. You're never going to win this argument. My statements are based in fact, and you're responses are based in the hopes that somehow you'll just wear me down. It ain't gonna happen. So please continue to make a fool of yourself. Because I plan to continue to make a fool of myself.

But thats a matter of opinion, still if they could translate 'unter aller kanone' then this whole post wouldn't be needed. |

| 'unter aller kanone' means "under all cannon" perhaps a misinterpertation? Also roaming east proves my point. Modern usages of the word suck did begin as sexual insults.....but evolved as you can see by roaming east. Roaming East=1 Mal=5 Fredf=0 P.S. I preferred moron to bozo....it made you sound smarter. | Yes, you are right that it was used as a "general" term of derision. The Internet research says that it was in general use as a term of derision but it really did NOT have the sexual connotation that it has today and the connotation that was implied in the usage that was made in the US-EN version of the game. When "Your coffee sucks" was uttered, it was the equivalent of saying, "You coffee sucks dicks." which is a meaning that was not affixed to the usage of the word "sucks" until the latter part of the 20th century. Please, please, please, please, please do the research here. I'm getting very tired of restating the obvious. But I do appreciate the THOUGHTFUL responses that I'm starting to see. Thank you people.

| I really cant believe all of you are wasting your time on this. I agree that when I heard it used in the game something really didnt sound too right but I didnt stop and go "holy hell! an anachronism!". I just went "wait...whatever". This is all irrelavent and I think we all have something more important to do than discuss the historical beginnings of a few words. |

| Well I didn't think it would raise as much of a fuss as it has either. It was just an observation about a something a bit odd in the game, something that was either a joke by the developers or a mental lapse on their part, I'm not sure which. I didn't think it was grounds for the battle of monumental proportions that it became but apparently everybody else did. The rational members of this forum will recognize the validity of my initial statement. Others will continue to rail on ad nauseum about something they apparently know nothing about. All I can say to those people is that the Internet research will bear out the voracity of my statements.
