Can you give some more details on your problem? Like what skins you downloaded, where you put them, etc.

i downloaded some weapon skins and a charachter skin(the italian army one).
i put them in the "main" directory, just like in the readme file, but they just do not work

Since version 1.4 of CoD4 it will not accept custom IWD's in the main folder. You might have to make a mod folder in Call of Duty 4/Mods/ for it to work correctly.

Pretty much. There is one thing you could try though.

On your CoD4SP shortcut, right click and go to properties. Then add this to the end of the target field

+set fs_game mods/coolmod
Then make a mod folder called "coolmod" and put the .iwd in there. Run the game as see if the skins work or not.

no, it's not working. doesn't matter, i won't play mp till the exit of mw2. i already was not playing mp. thanks
