COD 2 Multiplayer not working with vista.

HI, I have windows vista installed on my computer and cod 2 multiplayer isn't working, but singleplayer works great. My main problem is to install patch 1.3. Here is what I did I followed al the rules on how to properly install cod 2 on vista, but for some weird reason when I installed patch 1.3 it says I have patch 1.2 installed. Everytime I start multiplayer I get black screen and I tried running as administrator and Iknow you need patch 1.3 to make the game work on vista. If anybody know how to solve this patch 1.2 problem please post. Patch 1.3 installation problem!

1. You dont need the 1.3 patch to run COD2 on Vista

2. Even if its telling you that you currently have 1.2 installed, that still isnt 1.3. It should allow you to upgrade from 1.2 to 1.3.

If it doesnt, then there is a deeper install problem, probably due to mucking up the Vista registry.

3. Download a version of the 1.3 patch that doesnt require installing:

Open the Rar file (you will need WinRar for this - its free to download), and drag the contents into the COD2 directory.

You will be prompted to replace certain files - click ok to all.

First of all hi,

I have axactly the same problem, i have tried everyting and i'm getting pretty desperate .
If i start multyplayer there is a black screen for 5 seconds, then it sais cod2_mp.exe does not work anymore...
Single player works great, i have updated to 1.3 but when i start single player the right bottom of the screen sais v1.2. But that was there even before i patched.
i have googled a lot about this but nothing worked, any suggestions are welcome.

OK, britvroman, two things,

First of all, I don't think you have a patch problem. I have that same 1.3 patch installed and actually, I believe the patch only updates single player to 1.2 but it does update multiplayer to 1.3... that is, if you could ever get into it.

Secondly, I had the same Multiplayer problem... until tonight. I unplugged my USB sound system and it started up great! Multiplayer opened right up! So you might try disabling any sound card or anything you're using for sound just to see if that fixes it. Then if it does, maybe try different sound drivers or just get a new sound card altogether???

Thanks for the help everyone it turns out the problem was the sound! When I disabled the sound I could enter the multiplayer! I was real happy about that, but after playing for a 1 minute I got kicked out to my desktop. I tried again, played for about 1 minute and got kicked out again. I will try older sound drivers hope that will solve the problem. Once again thanks for the help guys!

Just FYI I checked further into my problem (which I think might have been the same as yours) and even though disabling my sound made the game work, it kinda sucks not having sound.

So it turns out that I believe the problem was that the speakers I was using were USB, (which doesn't use my sound card and is recognized as its own sound device) and there was no input device for these USB speakers (since they're just speakers) and since the multiplayer does have voice capabilities, I think it was probably looking for an input device and then crashing since there was no input/mic (I'm thinking this since nearly all sound cards will at least have a mic plug in the back)

So what I did as a workaround is I right-clicked on the little speaker down by the clock, and hit "Recording Devices" and I enabled the one called "Stereo Mix" and that fixed it. You might have different input devices but I believe you simply need to make sure there is at least one audio input device.

As an alternative, if you simply go out and buy a cheap USB Headset (which includes both headphones and a mic) and use that when playing COD2 that should also fix your problem (they're also handy for LAN parties).

So you have two options, either enable "Stereo Mix" as a sound input device, or buy a USB headset.

I hope you get it sorted out. I'd hate to see you have to play without sound. As far as the kicking you out after a minute, maybe it is related to disabling your sound, maybe if you try what I said, it'll like that and stop crashing on you???

Anyway, good luck :-) and I can't believe nobody has figured this out yet.

Same errors as everyone else, single player was fine, multiplayer would black screen then error msg 'cod2_mp.exe has stopped working.

Just by pluggin in a mic to the back of the pc solved it. Sound with speakers - I'm now a happy bunny

hey, i have the exact same problem as all of you guys, and i can get it to work fine if i disable all my sound options for input/output but that just gets me fristrated to i tried the approach you mentioned about plugging in a headset and things but to no avail :/ any more information people can give me on solutions to this problem would be GREATLY appreaciated
