A new BF Vietnam problem, I need some help

Ok, i searched through all the other posts and didn't see a similar problem as mine listed, so I figured it would be okay to start a new thread. I hope that doesn't break any rules.
Here's my problem. I can get the game to load. If I click on the icon, or choose "play" from the cd menu, it starts to load(at least I get the little hourglass thing next to my mouse pointer), but it never actually leaves the desktop. Then, by hitting ctrl-alt-delete, I can bring up the window that shows bfvietnam running, which it really isn't of course. So I try to "end task" and I get the error that says it's not responding and I have to "end now" from the second window. The only way I've been able to get it to run, and I'm not even sure this is how I did it, was to try to click on the icon, and then after waiting a few minutes, ctrl-alt-delete like I was going to hard reboot, and then cancel, and all of a sudden, it will start running. Can't really figure it out. Once I get it running, it runs pretty decent. But after finishing one map, if I choose to replay I'm good to go. But if I choose to try and go back and choose another map, it crashes back to the desktop. Any and all tips on fixing any of this is greatly appreciated.
