Don't install the 1.02 patch, just go straight to the 1.03. Now the problem with the 1.03 patch is that it changes the way that the CD key is stored, it introduces an encrypted CD key system to stop hackers stealing your key.

I believe there was some help on EA's site about this problem, here is what they have to say.

Quote:
1. Open My Computer.
2. Open the Program Files folder.
3. Open the EA Games folder.
4. Open the Battlefield 2 folder.
5. Open the Support folder.
6. Double-click on the Battlefield 2_code.exe.
7. Type in your CD-key as listed on the back of the manual and click Next.
8. The window will close (your serial number is now refreshed in the registry).
