Can't play online after applying the 1.02 patch

I was playing fine with a straight install from the CD's. I downloaded the 1.02 patch and attempted to install it. I got a patch fail error, so I tried two different ways of installing the patch:
1. Extracting to a temp directory then running from command line - this resulted in a patch fail due to bad patch.rtp file
2. Extracting then copying to the BF directory and running the patch.exe - this resulted in a correct patch application.

I went to play online and I continuously get the "This server only allows players with unmodified content to join. Revert your version of BF2 to the current official version to join" error when trying to connect to all kinds of servers (punk buster enabled, not enabled, ranked, unranked). I have uninstalled the whole game a few times and reinstalled the patch, always needs to be installed like described in #2. I have deleted out the BF directory completely and also the directory in My Docs.

Anyone have any ideas. It works fine without the patch which is really frustrating.

AMD Athlon 64 3400+
ASUS AV8 Deluxe Mobo
1 gig PC400
NVIDIA GeForce 5200 (128mb)
WinXP Pro SP2
160GB HDD
19" LCD monitor

I noticed the video card requires 5700 or greater but the unpatched game ran fine on my 5200, could the patch possibly be fixing me out of playing?

Installing it it the way you have done probably means that the registry didn't get properly updated, I suggest a complete removal, download a new copy of the patch and a re-install.

i had this problemo for aggges. only way to fix is to re format your hard drive! there really is no other way around this.....

Yes there is, but you have to make sure that you remove EVERYTHING to do with BF2 from the registry, as well as all the files on the hard drive.

Can i keep my profiles because i have certain button layouts and stuff that I love and it is hard to re-assign.

I don't see why not, but i have never tried it, profiles are easy to create for me, it only takes a few quick adjustments. make a backup of your profiles before deleting, then when you re-install see if you can copy the profiles folder back after re-creating yor accounts (naturally making a backup of the new profiles folder first in case it doesn't work)

Well, deleted everything on the PC related to BF2, cleaned the registry, and downloaded a fresh copy of the patch. Same problem, game wont play, exits to desktop when trying to get to the server list of mulitplayers or clicking on single player. One thing I have had trouble with, that I didn't mention previously, is when first installing the game, I can't seem to get the voice recorder to recognize my mic. I've used a USB mic/headset and also using the mic jack with a mic. I have sound built into the motherboard and no other sound card.
