HELP sound acceleration question

I have win xp....im running bf1942 pretty good but want try hardware accelleration for the sound option.....however when i had win 98 it locked it up and i couldnt get back in and had to re-install....Is there a file that i can change a value from like 0 to 1 or something if it locks up on me ?
