Strange lag issues

OK, yesterday I was playing MP in BF1942 when suddenly (my ping was 500+-600, I get almost no lag when it's like that) I started to get a bunch of lag. Weird. Very weird. I asked other ppl to see how high my ping was to make sure nothing was wrong with the way ping displayed, and they said it was about 500. Any ideas? Very strange problem...

try looking for if a program is taking up all your bandwidth, and scan for spyware and adware using a progrma like ad-aware.

The only programs in the backround I have are Quicktime (sometimes), PC Booster (little booster program), Modem Booster (for modems, but it works with DSL), and the standard Windows programs (i.e., volume adjust thingy). I have DSL (you might have guessed), which is supposed to get a ping of 180, but I get around 500-700, sometimes 1,000+.
