well i dont have any gun shot sounds ricoshays engine noises the usual sounds
i have backround music eg. atmosphire

Question Which version of Battlefield do you have?

Which version of Desert Combat?

Is DCX installed? or DC_Realism? Is DC 7 installed?

Are your sound card drivers up to date?

Ive got sound just not sound effects eg ricoshays engine sounds

Like I said, are your Sound card drivers up to date.

This is a common issue, with out of date sound drivers.
Its also common with an incorrect speaker setup. ie a 5.1 surround setup, for headphones, or a stereo speaker set, especially if only 1 speaker is working.

The sound effects work for me, or last time I had it installed.

the main game has sound but dc dont
ive got only one speaker working but thats always been like that ive only just got drivers for them

Well, See if you can get sound, in a stereo setup.

The only other thing I think that could be wrong, would be a corrupt installation.

Actually I've recently heard of strange sound issues popping up, after the installation of "Steam", for Half-Life 2. No idea what causes that, or how its related...
